Thanks again for the education. I know Clam exists under Linux as open source but I have never run
it.
I try to lock down my system from the initial install and stay away from potential rogue sites.

WTF?
Why are you unable to process simple comments?
Do you actually know anything about computers?
PotHead doesn't have to be viewing your posts in acw to see your trolling. He's already stated that
the only way he sees your posts is in replies as quoted text.
And I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, that he first encountered you in cola and some Mac group so
coupled with your infamous list he and everyone else has a good idea regarding your trolling.

My bad! <rolls eyes> I knew as soon as I clicked 'send'! ;-)

I can deal with the truth. I cannot deal with the lies being told by the
poster calling himself Wolffian.

He claims that he has installed and run ClamXAV. Have you?

Read this:- (By P. Phillips on the ASC forums)

There are no known Windows-like Viruses in the wild that self replicate
and affect macOS, because of the underling UNIX Foundation and
Permission Limitation.

Starting in macOS 11 Big Sur and above.

The Operating System resides in a Sealed and Read Only Volume that can
not be opened by the User nor by Third Party Applications.

The only Entity that can open and modify or alter this Volume is Apple.

That would occur when a update or UpGrade is performed.

So in effect, any Third Party Security Software ( AV ) is utterly
useless apart from protecting the Bank Account of the Developers

Sigh. the Windows malware (note that a computer virus is a soecific type of
malware) which is so common cannot affect Macs DIRECTLY. They can, however,
afect them INDIRECTLY, notably by attacking Windows systems (including
servers) on the network. If Mac antimalware is to be usefull, it should take
action against Windows malware. ESPECIALLY AS THERE ISN’T MUCH IN THE WAY
OF MAC MALWARE OUT THERE.

And, oh... most malware doesn’t attack the OS.

You’re an idiot.

Sigh. If you must work using data from their systems, it’s a good idea to
keep an eye out for Windows malware.

1. they won’t accept that they did something stupid and got bit. they will
say that the Mac user not having anti-malware was the vector allowing the
infestation. it’s simpler to just be able to point to the anti-malware and
say ’nope’.

2. if they can’t work, then something that you need may not be available in
time or at all, and _you_ can’t work. the boss ain’t gonna care why
you’re drawing a paycheck while not working.

3. the right (wrong...) malware can encrypt a database, a server volume,
more. then no-one can work. God help you if later investigation shows that
you could have stopped it.

JNust up the road from me is the municipality of Riveria Beach. One
gentleman, on a Mac, clicked on the wrong link. _His_ machine was unaffected.

It cost $600,000, and his job.

Note that among other inaccuracies in the story, Riveria Beach is NOT a Palm
Beach suburb. It’s a _West Palm Beach_ suburb. Barely. Palm Beach is over
the Intercostal and does not associate with mere peons. Especially not
Riveria Beach, which is largely black and Hispanic. (And no, mostly NOT
Cubans. Guatemalans. Hondurans. Salvadorans. Even Mexicans. And the blacks
include a lopt of Haitans. Nope, not the kind of people Palm Beach wants to
associate with.)

I do on a daily base. I work for two charity organisations. But I really
do not consider it to be my job to watch out for Windows malware.

Sorry, that is one of these urban legends and really complet nonsense.
And only absolut beginners believe in Snake Oil. If someone points with

Fabricated case and the above still applies: Urban legend. I never ever
had someone asking questions in this direction or any concerns.

You are spreading FUD. There is no mention of a Mac and its configuration:

Fort Lauderdale Fla. — A Florida city agreed to pay $600,000 in ransom
to hackers who took over its computer system, the latest in thousands of
attacks worldwide aimed at extorting money from governments and businesses.

The Riviera Beach City Council voted unanimously this week to pay the
hackers' demands, believing the Palm Beach suburb had no choice if it
wanted to retrieve its records, which the hackers encrypted. The council
already voted to spend almost $1 million on new computers and hardware
after hackers captured the city's system three weeks ago.

The hackers apparently got into the city's system when an employee
clicked on an email link that allowed them to upload malware. The city
had numerous problems, including losing its email system and 911
dispatchers not being able to enter calls into the computer.

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, ransomware is the
fastest growing malware threat, targeting both individuals and
organizations. In 2018, the massive "SamSam" virus disrupted the flight
information system, baggage displays and email at Cleveland Hopkins
International Airport, while another attack crippled computers at the
Port of San Diego.

City governments in Atlanta, Newark, N.J., and Sarasota, Fla., also have
been hit by ransomware schemes. And hackers have taken the information
systems of dozens of U.S. hospitals hostage.

"Ransomware is commonly delivered through phishing emails or via
'drive-by downloads,'" according to Homeland Security. "Phishing emails
often appear as though they have been sent from a legitimate
organization or someone known to the victim and entice the user to click
on a malicious link or open a malicious attachment."

The FBI, Homeland Security and U.S. Secret Service are investigating the
Florida attack, according to The Palm Beach Post.

Has no connection to the topic.

Son, I was one of those called in to deal with the immediate aftermath.
Riveria Beach spent over a million on new computers because of it. Some of
that went to us. It was a Mac. Believe it or don’t.

Are you claiming that an Apple Mac was compromised in this incident?

Did that happen simply by visiting an infected URL?

I was advised by the gurus on the ASC forums that that was impossible!

I doubt that. There are no, none, zero, Mac viruses. There are, however, Mac
malware, including trojans, worms, and more. And, yes, there are Mac versions
of several major ransomeware delivery systems.

You’re not just an idiot, you’re a _dangerous_ idiot.

That underlines the absolut incompetence of the body and the whole
IT-organisation(s).

And it has nothing to do with Macs and malware protection.
In case the computer concerned stood in the perimeter of the body: The
IT-organisations is to blame and only them and of course the lack of
education of the personnel. You chose.

And what comes next: Even more incompetence. Very bad is: You do not
understand what happens either or even more so. Sorry.

An infected URL cannot by any means create such a meltdown.
And in fact the county or the borough should certainly not fire the man
who clicked the URL they should all fire above him without any
exception. Immediately.

I still *miss a thorough analysis* and a *few relevant facts* that can
be checked. In the meantime completely OT anyway.
