I can't recall a time I applied for a job *as a motor mechanic*, even on
walk-ups, where I *wasn't asked*, either verbally or in writing. That
said, I attached my curriculum vitae to written applications. Most
industries, in their advertising, specify trade qualifications and
that's why, in any application I filled out, I added copies of my trade
certificates and any relevant courses. Even then, lots of places wanted
to *sight* originals. So my papers followed me *everywhere*.

Darren saying he was never asked for papers is just so much bullshit *in
the motor trade*. But then, as you say, he never worked in the
automotive industry *as a mechanic* so was never asked to see his
papers. Not at all surprising! ;-)

Looks like it's only unqualified people, where they aren't *expected* to
have trade papers, who aren't asked for them.
