The last scene of Martin Cruz Smith's novel, December 6, takes place
hours after the announcement of the "successful" attack on Pearl Harbor.
Protagonist Harry Niles' chief adversary, Japanese war hero
Col. Ishigami says, "The war is over" and kills himself. Harry exits
to the Tokyo street crowded with cheering poeple jubilant that the Americans
and British have been defeated.

Lets hope the Russian people get off easier from Putin's stupidity than
the Japanese people did as a result of Tojo's.

No indeed, the whole region loses with a completely hat stand person in
charge of a very large country. Could they not offer him to be the first
person on the moon in the new batch, and forget to bring him back?

Maybe Musk could send him to Mars.

Yes, and one of the problems is that although democracy has major flaws, in
the end the government can be chucked out if they make a pigs ear of it. The
so called democratic process in Russia seems to be you can stand if you live
long enough to be elected.

Various leaders in the US have learned this in the last
century. We try not to talk about it.

Ah! Life on Mars.

Raises a few questions:

1. What are you going to eat?
2. How do you control the air?
3. If you need a spare part, delivery is seven months at
the soonest

We could of course be spending money and talent fixing
the problems on earth.

Count out the numbers of POTUS's (POTii?) that have remained on the job
even after their minds were gone. Woodrow Wilson, Ronald Reagen, and now
Biden. there was one Russian, forgethis name.

Yes. Inventing a disease that kills off lots of people would be a good
start, or allowing an industrial accident that gassed a lot.

HGWells, some time ago, spoke of the danger of orgasms from alien
systems. (The common cold on Martians), and more is found out about the
effect of European diseases on America.

Food grown there probably with the aid of supplementary lighting
and hydroponics. It'll be vegan for quite some time I expect so it'll
probably be necessary to raise some algae for fatty acids and some soil
bacteria for B12.

> 2. How do you control the air?

Design problem - need a lot more details on the habitat design to
even think about that one ... except in principle. For long term, build
underground, leak alarms, plenty of emergency airlocks, plenty of air
circulation, plenty of plants, monitoring and filtering.

> 3. If you need a spare part, delivery is seven months at
> the soonest

Yep best have a good stock of anything that can't be made locally
and design everything to minimise external dependencies (using a lot of
common parts would be a good start). Being able to make a lot of things
locally would be crucial - so some good industrial 3D printers capable of
printing all (or nearly all) of their own parts between them would be
useful.

It'd be a bootstrapping operation so getting the initial load
right would help a lot -getting it badly wrong would scupper the whole thing
and kill everyone there.

> We could of course be spending money and talent fixing
> the problems on earth.

We can even do both and may well learn a lot about how to do the
latter by attempting to live on Mars. Establishing a Mars colony, even with
Musk's extravagant thousand ship approach would use only a minuscule
proportion of the talent and resources of eight billion people. The
offshoot benefits would almost certainly repay the effort many times over,
sending a few people to the moon just for bragging rights did.

I don't _think_ he believed he knew better, just that their information
was inconvenient, and so unacceptable.

The last two line are relevant.

Make up a list of _everything_ that needs to be on that rocket.
The habitat[1] people will have to live in for years, all the food and
other consumables needed until you can be confident of being
self-supporting, plus all the back-ups and spares.
How big is that rocket's payload?

[1] Maybe IKEA would be a better choice. Take plenty of Allen keys.

Just as proof of concept, try this in some isolated spot on good old
Terra where air, rainfall and garden soil are abundantly available.

Having done something similar myself -- it might be called
"homesteading" -- over 50 years ago, equipped with a couple of
truckloads of miscellaneous tools and equipment and a good variety of
DIY skills, what would I anticipate for doing it again with *total*
isolation from extenal resources? Maybe a million bucks (in today's
money) worth of materials, fuel, power equipment, spare parts,
fabrication equipment, pharmaceuticals etc. etc.

Colonizing Mars would be incredibly cool. And of the same level of
wisdom as chromeing the moon.
