Not especially, but in those days, books were very valuable and
expensive to copy, and Abbots and Bishops had been known to "borrow"
books to copy at their place and "forget" to return them.

There was also an element of controlled access, and making sure the
books could only be read in that room was part of it. You didn't take
the book to a table, the staff took a table to the book for you. If you
weren't senior enough, you didn't get in.

Dunno.
Were monks the only people allowed in the library?
Many of the books would be effectively irreplaceable, or cost a fortune
in labour and materials to replace - assuming you could manage to borrow
another copy from some other library.

Is that what they did with van Gogh's cast-offs?

Don't see many Toblerone boxes these days. Everyone's got a mobile.

Books were valuable back then, handcopied, and sometimes carried into
battle by warring tribes. There was something about St. Columnkill being
sentenced to go to Iona for something like that.
