A speeding motorcyclist on a faulty bike ploughed into a cyclist like a missile and left him seriously hurt.

Paul Crossland was riding his powerful 900cc Kawasaki ZX9 sports bike at an estimated 60mph on Two Mile Hill Road in May last year.

Bristol Crown Court heard he ricocheted off of a car before hurtling into cyclist Aurimas Minevicius.

Mr Minevicious suffered massive internal liver and bowel injuries and Crossland sustained a broken neck and a head injury.

Crossland, 42, of Worcester Road in Kingswood, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The recorder Mr David Chidgey jailed him for 16 months.

He told Crossland: "This carried a substantial risk of danger to other people.

"The motorcycle had serious defects which affected its braking and steering."

Crossland was banned from driving for three years and eight months and told to take an extended driving test.

Robert Yates, prosecuting, described how speeding Crossland hit a Hyundai car before colliding with cyclist Mr Minevicius.

Both riders were seriously hurt, the court heard.

An expert vehicle examiner found the Kawasaki had a rear brake bracket which was sheared off and re-attached with a cable tie, loose steering and an under-inflated front tyre.

The machine was in top gear before the crash, the court heard.

Mr Minevicious was left in daily discomfort and frightened at the sound of motorcycles.

Emily Evans, defending, said her client suffered from significant mental health problems.

Miss Evans said: "He recognises the harm he caused to that gentleman.

"He indicated regret and remorse in interview."

Miss Evans said her client would welcome a lifetime driving ban.

She added: "He won't be able, mentally or physically, to return to the road in any event."

What?

Nearly fifty years ago, the industry swapped to radial tyres - you must
have heard of them. They last for 20,000+ miles as a minimum. My car is
now just over seven years old from new and has covered about 17,500
miles. The tyres are nowhere near in need of replacement.

I have never had to replace a lamp either.

I keep a special watch over the windscreen wipers and washers, of course
- as should we all, as I'm sure you agree.
