Recorded Stage 4 of Gir on Quest HD and the whole hour was a repeat of Stage
1 Time Trial.
Anybody know what's going on?

Possibly...

The host broadcaster had great difficulties with heavy rain,
mostly in the early and middle parts of Stage 4. This affected -
pretty much obliterated - the usual local picture relays between
camera bikes, helicopters and light aircraft.

Eurosport showed some pictures where the top quarter or so was
poor but recognisable and the rest was totally broken up. They
used a lot of recorded interviews and maps and worked the
commentators hard until things improved towards the end of the
race stage.

Quest _may_ have looked at footage from the early parts and
decided there that there was not going to be enough to edit into
a worthwhile programme. It will be interesting to see if they
show a summary of Stage 4 today, apologise for lack of pictures,
or just ignore the past problems.

Are there local recordings on the bikes and helicopters that can be used
later?

Thanks for that.
The programme is very lacking in any form of information or explanation.
Last year some stages were missed due to snooker, IIRC, but no mention the
following day.

Not just Italians, anymore than Tour de Yorkshire is just Yorkshire men.

Nope, they fucked up, pure and simple

apparently they apologised at 11:30 on Twitter and rerun the correct edition
at midnight (like that's enough notice for anyone)

They didn't even update the EPG so that a season pass would pick it up

If you have catch up by Sky you can download the correct edition. But I
don't and I can't find it anywhere else

Orla apologised at the start of tonight's programme and said it was
available on something else - can't remember what.
Typical - the first hilly stage gone.

has some bits on but the live commentry ones don't seem to have moving
pictures. I haven't looked at longer than one at 1h 51 as 2 - 3h+ would be
too long.

"available on something else" looks like being:

<www.discoveryplus.co.uk/show/giro-ditalia-highlights>

It loads with links to stages 5, 4 and 3 showing. The "Fetch
more" button adds stages 2 and 1.

Just now, I tried playing one of those stage links and found it
requires cookies and a free registration (saying no credit card
needed). I didn't go further but it's probably worth a try when I
have more time.

That's the one! 45 min. would be without ads. Thanks.
If I can find a tuit I might register but I get fed up with all the little
log-ins. At least if it plays I might be able to download it and watch it
with an easily controllable player (MPC) or on the TV.
No worried about it being done and dusted as it's the tactics I like. The 3
GTs last year were possibly the most interesting ever overall, just by being
so unpredictable and unusual.

It was a "free" registration, didn't even bother to ask for validation of
the email address

Though annoyingly, it vetoes any password that on its list of cracked
passwords, that's globally cracked not just associated with your email

so I ended up a password that I'm never going to be able to remember

this is access to a free streaming service FFS, why the **** do I need it
protected like Fort Knox?

When I think Gyro, I either think of the Gyrocopter or a gyroscope of some
kind.

I've some little utilities that generate passwords. Can choose the number of
characters and I usually go for 12.
Another one will look at the p/w and give some idea of strength.
I get pissed off with sites that won't accept a p/w but don't say why - one
didn't like one of the characters but I had to eliminate the more arcane
ones unti I got OK.
In my main browser I use QuickNote and copy the data to a text file.
Sometimes I use obscure refs. to things like name of something - one, for
instance, is a village, clue in French, no connection with the place for
nearly 20 years. Some risk of forgetting it by now. Acracker was in the
'90s, had get the ISP up and running by 'phone and the ISP needed the p/w -
it was a Welsh word and the Welsh woman on the 'phone didn't know what it
was even when spelt out!

For me, it would be the (former) National Giro Bank in Bootle. I had a
small hand in the building of the centre (electrical work), over fifty
years ago.

And of course, a "giro" has long been the daily-use version of "girocheque".

Note the different spelling being critical here

I had a National Giro Account for years and then Alliance and Leicester
Building Society took it over and fucked it up.

The National Giro Bank was a pretty pointless organisation in any case.

At that time, you could walk into any branch of a clearing bank and open
a current account immediately without fuss.

The PO had at least 4 times as many branches as a bank, and had branches in
tiny villages where no bank would ever go

This was a very useful feature for people who needed access to cash in these
places

You were always able to keep cash in a Post Office account (if that was
important). I certainly did as a boy.

I dare say they would have accepted a cheque as a means of deposit and
let you draw cash from cleared funds.

Off-topic again but this is possibly an interesting tip for
anybody following the cycling at the Giro d'Italia. It also
applies to some other sports such as rugby union and football.

S4C is free to watch (on terrestrial in Wales and nearby, and on
Sky and - I guess - other services elsewhere in UK). It shows a
selection of events either live or delayed, always with Welsh
commentary and - occasionally - English commentary on red button
or subtitles. The build-up analysis and interviews may be missing
but there's often a radio or web supplement from other sources.

Giro: Today's cycling live coverage starts at 2pm so should
include the key parts of today's stage including Monte
Zoncolan. It's Welsh commentary only but uses the same pictures
of the action as on subscription services such as Eurosport. HTH.
