Panes of glass with laminating material in between them, but for reasons
I already explained I thought there may be an outer layer as well.

Clearly this is not the case and I take it all back ;-)

Well I knew they were panes with laminate between them, I didn't realise
how thin the outer layer actually was and assumed there was more to it.
Wrongly as it turns out.

... and tried today following this plan ..

it take a lot of polishing to improve even a small part, so given the
amount of scratching it would take a month of sundays and a lot of
polishing to do the job, so looks like it's one for the professionals.
