htop is betterer, also dstat

you might not find they're installed by default.

Are there still three types of personal computer users?

The fruity ones have systems that "just work", but you do it their way
or not at all.

The glassy ones have computers that mostly work, and if they go wrong,
you can usually dig deep enough to sort the problem out with a few mouse
clicks. You can, though, do the job *your* way and the command line is
still there from the days when Windoze was a layer on top of DOS.

The feathered ones have all the command line shortcuts and flags
memorised, and spend a lot of time working out why typing Top or ToP
doesn't do the same job as typing top. Admitted, if you are running a FO
great database, or a multi user, real time swerver, this is the best way
to run stuff.

I've been running Linux exclusively now since the turn of the cntury and
it's suited nicely, but recently, having moved to a 64-bit distro and
having neglected command-line fiddling on a terminal (mostly), but I do
resort to it from time to time. You're quite right: if you use the right
case, and command, it just works. sudo shutdown -h now oops!

The command line is like language.

The GUI, especially touch-screen GUI, is like shopping.

You have to learn a language; it's an ongoing process. [1]

Shopping entails no such effort but is subject to untoward surprises
and instant buyers's (clicker's, toucher's) remorse.

Then there are the daemonic ones who wonder why the feathered ones
keep changing things that don't need to be changed (ipconfig, systemd ...)
instead of simply enhancing the commands we've been using for a couple of
kilofortnights. We also wonder why the feathered ones make such a fuss
about upgrading and why the penguins have no concept of a core OS.

Tongues? Do you mean the jargon of Billyware or the
jargon of Unix/Linux?

The Internet was built on and runs on Unix and Linux,
not Microsoft. Apple OS is built on Unix as is the OS for every
smartphone be it an iPhone, Android or Harmony. The AT&T
landline telephone switches ran Unix.

You want a reliable, wide OS? Try Linux, not an OS that
gives you BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death).

Shopping for off the peg stuff.

Like most languages, the bigger your vocabulary the
better.

There is so mcuh you can do with a language, you just
need the vocabulary which is why that language is everywhere. A
language first written in the 1970s that uses the vocabulary
suited to slow printer terminals.

It's neat and there are so many utilities that tell you

had been running the back end of the EU billing system for the last seven
years without a reboot.

That language has grown rather than altered (at least in BSDs) so
that scripts written in the 1980s will still work today.

It's in the base system on FreeBSD as it has always been. There

On debian presumably apt-get cal will install it for you.

thats part of the whole problem, you are typing something, and suddenly
want to check on a date. type `cal' on the command line, and you have
your data. otherwise, under a `clicky' OS, you have to take your hand
off the keyboard, click on some ikon and return to keyboard. Too much
trouble. And no, just checked on latest Debian, no `cal'. Bummer, and on
All-Ireland Sunday, too much trouble to bother. Now 14.40 and kickoff at
15.30. A wet sunday on the Reek as well.

Someone suggest something on youtube?
