One of the reasons I use FreeBSD is that it doesn't lose the
functionality I use or even the way I use it - at least so far since 1993.
It has gained a lot new functionality quite a bit of which I also use.

How many times have you thought to yourself “I really love the waiting for
my PC to boot up do a bunch of updates just when I want to actually use
it”?

Of course if it meets your needs then fine, especially if it’s for a job
that really needs a PC. But I’m surprised at how many folk here use PCs to
access Usenet.

Also, I can’t imagine carting a laptop around when travelling yet that
seems to be what some folk do here rather than using one of those awful
“smartphone” thingies.

Meh - needs 64 bit nowadays; last i386 vn is 300M and from 2007.

Remember "Life-long Learning"? It's supposed to be about learning
*new* stuff that expands your understanding of the world and enhances
your interaction with it.

Not about learning the *same* stuff over and over again with each

It comes in i386 and amd64 these days as well as armv7, armv8,four
variants of powerpc and riscv64. Like Linux it started when the i386 was
new, unlike Linux it started as a port of an already mature unix BSD-4.3 to
the i386. Project motto is "The power to serve" focus on efficiency and
scaling.

Now if you want a BSD with a *lot* of ports try NetBSD - that runs
on just about anything that has an MMU. Their motto - "Of course it runs
NetBSD" focus on portability and code correctness.

The projects share a lot of code.

Or allow 100K of js -- effectively a roving "agent" for the
author/originator -- to run on your machine in order to see an image
or page of text.

Not to mention that as Gwgle and others keep tweaking/extending js and
js authors keep falling in line, you become feudally enfeoffed to
browser companies. It's like being obliged to drive this year's new
Toyota in order to pick a particu;ar book off of the library shelf.

I was given a 'smartphon' as a birthday present some years ago.I played
with it (oo-er!) for a while, then replaced it in its box and never
looked at the useless thing again.

I just don't want to join the 'eyes down' generation.

I use a lap top out and about occasionally as it is a far better bed for
making and editing recordings, usually in the caravan. At home I use two
desk tops as part of a lash-up radio studio.

I do have a mobile phone however. It also does texts and is a torch.
