The alternative to 'best' was 'a pint of cooking, please'
AIR
I also generally preferred it to 'best' at the time.

I have heard it said that the worst place to drink Sam Smiths is in
Tadcaster in the pub opposite the brewery - because they only have one
barrel at a time and roll it across the road as required.

I have not verified any of this

Quite a lot of the old Sam Smiths rural pubs around here are boarded up
now. Once it was the cheapest bitter you could buy, so we put up with it
for the price. Then after covid Humphrey added a pound a pint, making it
comparable with other brews.

He also banned music, smart phones, swearing and dogs so I think he lost
a lot of regulars.

Mined you, I usta drink his Extra Stout*. Better than Guinness!

That's prombably why I'm extra stout now

A friend, a farmer (Now confined to his bed) had a sick bullock, and was
advised to get him slops to drink, so the local pub obliged. For a
while, then they got a leetle suspicious.

I used to really like the (Old?) Museum beer, but Humphrey decided he
didn't like to pay tax on it or something.

The Greyhound in Saxton is a great oldtime pub:

The Angel and White Horse fronts the Old Brewery.
I remember that story (above) about John Willie Lees in Middleton.
Beer didn't travel well, not even to the brewery tap.
It's a lot better now - well it was last time I had it.

Marstons Pedigree used to travel well. Marstons used to deliver to the
old Winchester Brewery from where the beer was delivered to quite a few
old Winchester Brewery pubs. IMHO Martson's Pedigree was the best beer
around Winchester.

Didn't know that. I would guess it was the Yorkshire version, since
this was a spot near the triple meeting-point of Derbyshire,
Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire.

People have been convicted after knowingly giving some one a different
drink than they ordered. You are buying a round and I ask you for a
vodka and orange and you give me a double vodka and orange without
telling me, something like that.

Shireoaks then. The actual oak tree that stood at the junction of three
counties was in the grounds of Shireoaks Hall. The junction is now a few
miles to the south west of there.

There used to be, maybe still is, a great pub that operates from the
back of the non derelict part of Shireoaks Hall, run by the Laird
himself as a hobby. Had some great evenings in there with the locals
when moored in Shireoaks Marina. Later it was a good free overnight stop
with the campervan.

Happy daze.
