Just an update.

Drove it back from t'other side of Pontefract to York like a frog with
me knees splayed, cos I cazzun get the seat back far enough for comfort.

Since then had nowt but rain. But a close inspection of said vehicule
has revealed that it has come with loads of extras. All necessary
camping gear, awning, wind breaks, thermal windscreen wraps, power hook
up cable, hose, filters, spare batteries, original handbook, and a
fitted dieseasal cab heater, reversing camera, steering lock, etc. etc.
Keep on finding stuff. It is a real bargain.

I have put my younger neighbour on t'insewerance to keep the cost down a
bit (it's less than the car) and he and his other half have agreed to
look after it for me in return for using it now and again. This is a
great arrangement as I couldn't do it all messen now.

First job, to get that driving captain's seat to slide further back.
It'll have to be remounted and the end of an under bench seat storage
locker behind it cut back a bit. Second job, get a tow bar fitted.

New lease of life!

Love it.

Tone

For a Hymer three years oldererer than my last one, it is in far
betterererer condition.

Might even enter it into a couple of classic vehicule rallies next year,
if I can sort out the public liability insewerance they demand for a
couple of million.

With the new aluminium mobility scooterer trailer coming, that holds two
scootererers that should be one hell of an outfit.

All we need now is to train up a mobility scootererer display team.

Formation loops and rolls anyone?

Excellent news. Do you plan on fitting a tracker? Wish we’d had one in our
van.

It’s a common tactic for ne’er do wells to steal a van and then park it up
somewhere unobtrusive for 24 hrs to see if anyone comes looking for it
(anyone who had the foresight to fit a tracker that is).

You can get quite cheap ones that use a mobile SIM card and report the port
the position of your vehicle on request.

On this camp site, there's an old Dodge camper van, a couple of pitches
down from here.

It looks a bit like the first image here:

https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo/vintage-dodge-van.html

Not sure how something like this ever got to the UK.

I must send that URL to my brother. His SWMBO has had MS since she was

A lot of strange American vehicles were brought over by US forces
personnel when they were stationed here durong the Cold War. They would
cost too much to take home at the end of their service here, so they got
sold to locals.

Our morris side were going to do a similar thing as The Black Barrows
back in the 70s after the old RAF Hawker Hunter display team. But we didn't.

Hymer are a German maker of motorhomes and camper vans. Fairly new to

Also :

Indiana-based Thor Industries acquired German-based Erwin Hymer Group
(EHG) in 2019, and became the largest global RV manufacturer in the
process.

This isn’t the first time Hymer set foot on American soil, but
hopefully it will be a better experience. Hymer bought a Canadian
camper company in 2016 and established Hymer North America, but
financial issues saw it shut down during Thor’s acquisition process
last year.

So in my day when my parents were alive, and this wasin the late 60s and
early 70s, most of the motorhome makes were just fitted into an existing
vehicle like a Commer or VW. They tended to have roofs that could be raised
to give headroom.
I don't recall any bespoke makes.

In this country in the 1960s up until the 1980s, if you wanted a
motorhome, you emulated Cliff and his mates and converted an old bus.

The we started importing Winnebagos from the USA and Hymers from Germany.

Now, once again, the fashion is for custom conversions, and those who
live on them full time do stealth conversions, which look like a
standard van from outside at ground level. This lets them get away with
parking overnight on almost any road or lorry park if necessary.

These companies buy the bare chassis + engine + drivetrain

Tony's is a Fiat Hymer; here in North America - Ford and Dodge
were once popular frames but Mercedes has made recent inroads.
Even the fairly small camper vans - 20 feet - have toilets,

When you said 'grand' I visualised a Bechstein or a Steinway and
wondered if it was a fold-up, store-up or collapsible one, or maybe
inflatable?

On second gooves, my mother had a grand but it was too big even for the
living room in a fairly roomy detached house, and even Hymers can't
compete with that. She gave it (the grand) away to an aspiring concert
pianist. We had room for a nice big Christmas tree that year.

Decorations from The Olden Dayes™ were found and pressed into service,
but being just after the war, we made most of the decorations - woven
paper baskets Danish Style, aluminiumiumium milk bockle topses cut into
a spiral. then pulled out a bit to extend them into sort-of spiral
cones, Lametta (floppy thin strips of a lead/tin alloy, bought) draped
over the branches, and probably, stuff I forget.

The lights lasted for years, and the bulbs were screw-in 12v variety.
When one *did* go open circuit, you had to guddle in the depths ofthe
tree and find theculprit, and since they were 'out', finding them
amongst the prickly neegles was a bit of a promble. <Speel chucker
throws wobbly> Unscrewing up to twenty blubs and screwing-in a good one
often took agesandages. I don't unforget the 'replacement' ever having
been a dud itself, but it would have been a fine ploy to escape
preparing (say) the Brussels sprouts.

I must be bored - writing all this <insert worm of choice>

We (well my Dad did) solved the problem of bulbs blowing by lengthening
the chain and adding (in the case of a 20 bulb string) 2 extra bulbs. 70
years on my brother is still using the same string of bulbs (+2). Well
not quite, years ago he unsoldered the fabric and rubber covered wires
from the screw in cups and replaced them with modern PVC covered wire.

Our piano is quite similar to the one at this recent auction sale,
but perhaps not worth quite as much .. :-)

I think they're called upright grand pianos.

I read that and the 'orrible taste of the glue came to mind - from when
we sat down to make up those paper-chain decorations - they were stuck
to the ceiling in a diagonal pattern between the ceiling light fitting
and the corners of the room. Who needs a professional decorator when
you have artistic skills like that?

Then there was the "Blowing Up of the Balloons", and sticking them up at
ceiling level.

Suddenly unforgets how we used to make paper 'lanterns' out of coloured
foolscap. It involved cutting lots of parallel slits in the paper, that
didn't go to the bottom or top of the paper in landscape. Deft jbex with
scissors or sharp knife or razor blade required. You then curled the
paper into a tube and glued it, then squashed it top to bottom a bit. If
you were really brave you put it over a nightlight candle. Don't
unforget that many catching fire unless a draft blew them over!

As well as paper chains, we also stuck long strips of coloured tissue
paper together, and twisted them before hanging them up across the room.

As a kid I can't ever call again actually buying decorations. Even the
tree was a real one with roots that was dug up from the garding, potted
and replanted at New Year.
