How many workshops have high pressure exhaust steam to hand? Steam from
a kettle probably would not hack it.

I misremember a Momerset Saugham story set in the Pacific where in
passing a Naval vessel is preparing an old oil barrel for potable water
using steam. It took 2 days.

In passing, that reminds me of the story of the capture of Pelilue (sp?)
Island by the americans during WWII, that the fresh water supplied was
brought in in former oil drums, and the men could not drink it, and some
died as a result.

In my youth, besides Georges Simenon and Nevil Shute, I read a lot of
Somerset Maughan novels and short stories and enjoyed the BBC
dramatisations. I can still hear the voice of Carlton Hobbs who narrated
this particular story. I wish I could remember the name of this novel,
it revolves around the son of an Australian politician who has disgraced
himself, with, as I remember it, an older woman. As a result he is
bumming his way through the South Pacific. I know it does not end well
for him. Any offers?

It does if you take the top off it and pour it in, or put a funnel in
the hole in the top and pour it into that.

Wasn't Black Dog a mate of Blind Pew, delivering the Black Spot to
Billy-Bones? None of the in the least bit attractive as personality.

In my estimation the best of the Long John Silver's was Alfred Burke.
His sense of menace was not relieved by the humour and mateness of
Robert Newton.

I saw the Newton TV version as a young shaver but by the time of Burke I
was a grown man.

My remembering may be mismembering.
