Sure but the doubling of price as it crosses the Atlantic seems to
be pretty solid since around 1980 at least.

You tweaked my interest and set me wondering when did Canada adopt a
decimalised currency. I discovered that it was in the middle of the 19th
century, unlike Australia that adopted a decimalised dollar not very
long before the UK decimalised in the second half of the 20th Century.

I was fascinated to find that the buck coin has a Great Northern Diver*
on the back and hence it is known as a 'loonie'. The 'toonie' is a t(wo)
(l)oonie coin.

Has the Shed (supposedly a haven for oppressed people) considered that if it receives google groups output text from someone using Google groups that you're able to read it perfectly and then y'all complain back to the person they are not to use Google groups when you yourself have read the Google group text perfectly and it's just basically from what I can see a prejudice against google groups just like y'all might have a prejudice against say African people .it's really sickening. Have a nice day. eat more pecans.

Now rarely mentioned if not wholly forgotten is that when the $1 coin
was about to replace the $1 bill, the finished and fully approved dies
were lost in transit, never AFAIK to be recovered.

The result was to replace the original image of voyageurs (presumably
French persons) with one of the loon. One version or another of a
voyageur dollar had long been in circulation in Canada prior to the
loonie but so rarely used that I've never seen one.

The Australian dollar was introduced at a rate of 2 dollars to the pound
so your replacement cent was worth 1.2d, closer to the penny than the
UK's somewhat expensive (for the consumer) effort.

As I remember it, the Australian PM announced that the new unit would be
called 'The Royal'. That went down like a lead balloon with your Ocka.

Large parts of ireland worked mostly on dollars. five shilling was taken
to be dollar (as you wrote), and 2/6 was a half dollar. I remember pint
of stout was 1/6.. Someone travelling abroad (Cambodia) wanted to know
what to bring, i recommended dollars, unless central Africe, where old
Austrian money (printed in London) is still used. !947 was the last
silver english money I ever saw, although there was a printed line on
Irish pounds saying "One pound sterling payable to the bearer when presented in
London."

I well remember the silver dollars - 1967 was the last year of
actual silver. These coins were being hoarded at that time
because of the silver content.
< dimes, quarters, 50 cent coins also >
< nickels were nickel ; coppers were still copper fwiw >
Today the silver dollars sell for about $ 30.
They are a big heavy coin - it's a wonder they survived
as long as they did - in the days of $ 1. & $ 2. bills.

I stand corrected by wiki on a couple points :

In 1959, I was given, as a birthday gift to pay for a driver training
course, $60 in real US silver dollars. Foolishly, I used them for
that purpose rather than squirreling them away. Even aside from the
possibility that one or more of them might have been "rare" issues,
would I be ahead better than with same money in the bank? Or just
kept up with ca. 600% inflation?

At that time, I occasionally got US siver dollars from the bank for my
minimal teen-aged spending just to be eccentric. I had at least one
case of a store refusing to take one for a quotidian transaction --
they were that rarely seen in common use.

Yes. some time ago. I picked up some currency, specially S/American
stuff over the years. Useless, mostly, though is all cards now, cash, as
in coins is too heavy for tracksuit bottoms now. We are doomed, I tell
you, doomed.

Not been my experience, but then nobody would be very interested in my data
in any case.My first SSD which was one of those like a mega sized chip,
failed and lost everything. Luckily, as you say I keep a weekly back up on
rust.
