no doubt you've had a spectrum analyser lashed up 24/7 to an aerial
pointing to Bilsdale since the fire

and then a CCTV camera pointing at the spectrum analyser screen,

and the CCTV DVR set up to send you an "alarm" text message when
"motion" is detected on the spectrum anaylser screen!

Those pics show two things:
That the demolition team were very good and knew <exactly> what they
were doing and
That the damage inside the mast was vast - even what looks like LDF5 or
LDF7 with its outer gone - either burnt or melted.

I don't think Arqiva had any real alternative.

Yes, although I did say a while back that I thought an explosives expert
should be able to do this fairly easily, and even predicted that they
might do it in sections to contain the debris, still I'm particularly
impressed by the containment mostly into the site itself, with only the
very top section going any distance into the surrounding environment,
and that not very far.

Very impressive.

I'm trying to work out from the first large picture,
<https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/resources/images/13094137.jpg?type=article-full>,
the top-down fish-eye view, whether the mast has accidentally landed on top
of any buildings or has very skilfully been directed into a narrow gap
between buildings. There's certainly one cylindrical section on top of a
small building. I'm not absolutely sure where the base of the mast was...

If you roll back and find the video you will see that the mast actually
came down between two buildings but either one section bounced or
something and ended up on top of the building to the west of the gap. It
can't have come down with much force as the building - even its roof -
appear to be undamaged.

I wonder why they chose to make the building fall towards the buildings
(albeit in the narrow gap between them) rather than making it fall the
opposite way where there is just moorland for it to land on. Maybe the
latter would have needed extra permission with the area being a SSSI or
AONB.

As far as I could see, that section on top of the building does indeed seem
to have caused no visible damage to the roof.

I wonder how they are getting on with removing the scrap metal. Arqiva
haven't updated their page since the day of the demolition (which they call
"dismantling") either to describe the clearance process or to announce that
mini-Bilsdale is now in operation. I presume it uses the same mux
frequencies as Sutton Bank and as big-Bilsdale used to use. Or will Sutton
Bank be turned off at some stage?

I wonder how long it will take for the new mast and transmitter equipment to
be built and commissioned, and whether it will be any different (eg height,
ERP) to the old one.

That Heath-Robinson description brings back memories of a setup I had to
devise many years ago to capture diagnostic network traffic that was
happening at the time a server crashed - which reliably happened at some
unspecified time after stress testing began. I was using a "Sniffer" - a
dedicated laptop running software similar to the present-day Wireshark, but
with an important difference: it had a finite buffer which would overflow
and ditch the important traffic if left capturing after the server crashed.
My solution hinged on the terminal with the login session that was running
the test being connected by RS-232. I redirected the normal confirmation
messages to /dev/null, so the only time there was any traffic on the RS-232
was if the server put out a Kernel Panic message. And I connected one of the
RS-232 lines to the "stop capturing" input on the sniffer, so traffic would
be captured up to the point that the server crashed.

Wouldn't suppose that a short section of the mast without too much
clobber on it would be that heavy, and those building roofs are mucho
better than the average roof all that possibility of falling solid state
water!..

They have been reporting it on national radio yesterday, and commenting
about some adverse effect to wildlife, which I thought a little odd myself.
Surely it must have been on testing for some time though.

The reason it's taken so long to get mini-Bilsdale running has apparently
been due to legal delays to access the moorland adjacent to big-Bilsdale,
due to the area being an SSSI or AONB. So I think we can be fairly sure that
the work to erect mini-Bilsdale will have been carried out with sympathy to
wildlife. And it's in an area of land that was already bare earth or scree
because it was an old quarry, so I doubt whether very much heather (wildlife
habitat) had to be cleared.

What is the plan for Sutton Bank now that mini-Bilsdale is running? Is it
still needed, or can mini-Bilsdale cover the area south-west that Sutton
Bank was designed for? And what is the longer-term plan (eg this winter) for
mini-Bilsdale, given that it was reported that the mountings for the guy
wires would not withstand a harsh winter? I suppose they will keep the base
of the old mast clear to allow for the permanent mast to be rebuilt, and
will not be able to use it for an interim mast between mini-Bilsdale and
new-permanent-Bilsdale.

Makes me wonder now that they have knocked down olde Bilsdale why don't
they just get on with building a new replacement mast?, surly Alan Dick
or Balflour Beatty can lay hands on one somewhere?.

Or are they waiting for Emley MK3 to be taken down first thats if its
still there?..

Won't the replacement require planning permission (despite it being 'new
for old' etc) ?

However, I'm wondering, if they're wondering, whether they could make do
with the 80m tower (that is coming next) permanently ?

I suspect they will assess carefully the dead spots from the 80m tower,
it might be cheaper to fill in those with some relays ?

AFAIK the aerial work at Emley has been complete for some time.

My money says that the temp mast will be taken down and rebuilt at
Bilsdale albeit maybe not quite so tall?

Is it man enough to take all the clutter Bilsdale had ? It might only be
a slimline model, because at Emley it just supported a set of DTT aerials ?

No it didn't. There was/is also at least two FM transmitters and a
couple of DAB muxes on aerial arrays inside the tube all of which would
have had to be transferred to the guyed mast.

Even the temp mast at Bilsdale has got a good deal of clutter on it
already including DAB and FM aerial arrays and I suspect probably some
dishes low down as well. What is being done about such as cellular I
know not.

Judging from the "planning permission not required" responses from my
local council, if the external appearance is the same (or close enough
it makes little difference) and the purpose is the same "usage class",
then a replacement will not require planing permission.

The planning permission drawing shows FM and DAB provision.

What's intriguing is none of the non-broadcast third party users have
