Replacing the spinny disk with an ssd is the only guaranteed way to speed it

'Tosh' already has an SSD and not a 'spinny' disk and don't think it's
worth trying to find an SSD that'll fit ageing Nettie.

This is FN we are trying to help. Also Nettie is a single disc machine,
so it can either have the spinning disc installed or the SSD but not
both. I don't know the insides of Nettie, but some netbooks make it
easy to remove the hard drive and some are fiendishly complicated.

Transferring everything from a spinning disc to an SSD is not as simple
as it sounds. I tried using the utility that came with the SSD, and it
appeared to be doing what it was supposed to, and an hour or so later it
told me it had completed OK. When I physically swapped the discs over,
it wouldn't boot!

I ended up putting the spinning disc back, creating a disc image on a
USB connected hard drive, then creating a recovery DVD. I then swapped
the spinning disc for the SSD, booted from the recovery DVD and restored
the disc image from the DVD onto the SSD. However, I am a bit more
computer literate than many, and I wouldn't suggest that method to
anyone not confident they could carry it out unsupervised.

Memory upgrade is the next best thing, and it is usually worth doing.
The utility I pointed to is clever enough to know the maximum memory
capability of any given system it is run on. I put a copy on a pen
drive, so that I can run it on any machine without having to download it
each time.
