I picked the bike up yesterday, a Hex Ezcan was fitted to control the
running lights. The lights are coming off when I get the chance, and I
cannot see why I'd keep the Ezcan, I'm not one for gadgets, so don't see
the point, and, being as they are £150+ new, maybe worth selling?

Oh, I've just signed up for (yours?) the forum.

Their FAQ doesn't inspire confidence:

"the maximum draw of those blips is 800μA (microamps)/hour"

WTF does that even mean?

uA / hour doesn't resolve to watts, or joules, or coulombs, so what
the hell were they _trying_ to say?

If it was 800 uA*hr/hr, why not just say the average current drawn
by the stus LED is 800 uA and leave it at that?

But I'd not question their estimate that it would take more than a
year at 0.8 mA constant draw to drain most motorcycle batteries.

I presume they mean the Ezcan, which is a small control unit for
additional power points, uses a small amount of power to keep it alive.
As it uses such a small amount, I'd presume they are saying that it's not
like a typical, say, bike alarm which flattens the battery after ~2 weeks.

I'm aware of what the Ezcan is, and had no worries about how much
power it draws. The question in the FAQ was regarding the Ezcan's power
draw in quiescent mode from the periodic flashes of its status LED,
presumably from someone with experience of aftermarket alarm systems
and the like.

_My_ question is about their incorrect usage of engineering units. I
tend to take these things quite literally, and I appreciate clarity
and precision, when specifications are involved.

No, it's not my forum. It's owned by a German architect who is largely
absent now but keeps paying the registration fees. I assist with janitorial
duties.

Just looked on UKGSer which has a lot more traffic than the quiet backwater
of the RS forum. Only a couple of listings, one at 75, one at 80. No
responses to the posts so perhaps did not sell.

Check Ebay finished listings then stick it on any forum you are on before
Ebaying.

Stick it on one of the GS sale groups on Facebook. They love adding
shitloads of extra lights & happily spend insane amounts of money on
tat like that. Have you *seen* how much Denali lights are..?

That did the trick. Listed at 9pm last night, lights, sat nav mount and
Ezcan sold by 9am.
£120 for the lot, so worthwhile getting rid.

This is one of my (many) stupid hills to die on - why do "bikers" [1]
have their fucking fog lights on and their headlamps on full fucking
beam?

It doesn't make them any more visible it just marks them out as twats -
if anything it makes them more difficult to see as I can't work out how
fast they're going (usually not very) as they're just a bloody bright
blob.

Wankers.

[1] It always seems to be (or at least feeds my prejudices) the "biker
lifestyle", showing it to the man advertising executives, loud pipes
save lives, full Charlie and Ewen go to Stevenage types.

Because they think it looks cool. Seriously, that's the only reason.

Quite. It actually makes it hard to own a GS, knowing that you'll be
associated with those knobs. But they're such damn good bikes for the
types of trails around here that I'm prepared to put up with that.

I'd dispute that's the only reason *1. There are studies indicating a
'triangle of light' at the front of a motorcycle improves motorcycle
visibility - a couple of DRLs in addition to the headlight or, as one
study suggests is more effective, a light on one's helmet. Equally there
are studies saying it makes no difference so you pays yer money...

I have no idea why people ride with full beam on in the face of oncoming
traffic or during the day.

*1 MRDA - I have a pair of DRLs on the front of our GSA that, frankly,
look bloody ridiculous. *2

*2 The bike has been modified in preparation for the Iron Butt Rally
that, unfortunately we were unable to attend this year due to COVID
restrictions. In the 2019 rally, very late at night, we were riding for
miles down a twisty country lane in the US. Large chunks of the road had
been dug up leaving huge holes, gravel and not much evidence there was a
road there at all. It was pouring with rain and there were deer
everywhere. We had some pretty big DRLs on the bike but they just
weren't good enough and I swore I was going to get the biggest set of
lights I could before we rode the next one
(https://thewellers.net/iron-butt-rides/iron-butt-rally/2019-iron-butt-rally/2
in the section headed Shame). I don't care that the lights look
ridiculous, nor what people think, if it means I can see better in those
conditions because of them.

The point there is your DRLs are less daylight-running-lights on during
the day but on during the night so you can see stuff (usually simply
referred to as "lights") and there wasn't traffic coming the other way.

Big difference.

the UKRMer formerly known as B**** Mike has been coming to the same
conclusion. His olive green R1250 GS Adventure looks ideal for his staure
but he does not like the ubiquity of the bike and the lifestyle biker
assumptions made by others.

The bike seemed ideal for the nadgery roads we rode in the Scottish Borders
and D&G.

Pretty much every adventure bike we saw round Scotland in the last
week had their extra lights on, even in bright sunshine.

Actually, after I got hit last year, I did wonder whether extra
running lights might have helped. The driver may not have looked
properly, but she probably did what most car drivers do and glanced
expecting cars. She didn't see my headlight against a background of
other headlights and reflections off a wet road. It *might* have saved
me having to dig out details of the incident every time I change
insurers for the next few years.

A car drove into the back of the OldRedWing when it was running a full
dozen stop/tail lights, and two indicators per side. Oh, and an LED
strip along the top box spoiler.

If they don't look, they won't see you.

I'm not sure about the full beam thing. I always thought it was them not
bothering to check their headlamp adjustment, particularly with pillion
and full luggage.

The fog light thing, though? Just wankers, as you said.

Forget which mag now but when I were a lad the perennial SMIDSY always ran in
the letter columns. I recall a fireman writing in to point out they still pulled
out in front of his bright red 7 tonne fire truck with disco lights going.

Just WTF. I have to have the headlight on. I have extra light, which it came
with, they've been turned on to make sure they work. Just maybe if I was caught
in a torrential downpour I might consider the possibility of using them.

The full beam thing isn't just limited to the GS brigade (I also have
one...) but a lot of full fat sportsbikes have them on too.

It's a deliberate decision to have them on main beam - not sure what
they aim to achieve - perhaps it is the new LPSL thing.

Remember "Nidge", who always rode on full beam? I threatened to take a fucking
hammer to his headlight on a BOTAFOT. He used to claim it was "safer".

Running on full beam? no. But there is a thing about a pair of lights being noticed more than a single source.
Even better if they are wide angle and visible from the side?
I have these new 180deg "side shooter" LED's https://flic.kr/p/2mkyfgu and repeated testing proves they make a radical difference www.4x4at.com/predator-vision-side-shooter-2-light
Of course I still ride assuming "nobody has seen me and they all want to kill me", but one actually has to avoid them on many fewer occasions. Noticeably better than the conventional PIAA LP270 fogs these lights replaced, so the "side shooter" elements do make an impact on drivers waiting/emerging from junctions. Also on jaywalking pedestrians.
It's interesting, I believe some of these goons always have seen you, but suffer an unconscious/conscious Fuck You response, which these Very Bright Lights startle them out of.
https://flic.kr/p/2mkDhoz

I see some bicycles sporting a pair of bright LED's, I expect they are discovering same.
