The door at the entrance from the bus station is now working again or at
least it is open.

Anyone wanting to get away from the rat race, the newspaper kiosk is up
for rent.

Just curious, how early in the morning do the Scottish and UK printed
national papers arrive at Fort Bill?

I don't know, but I strongly suspect they'll all be there early
morning in time for shops opening. John Menzies are responsible for
most Scottish distribution, and use road and air transport. The days
of trains being used are, sadly, long gone.

They were always there if I went to work early (weather permitting). I
suspect there before 0700h.

It is what happens when the unions think that perishable items
(including newspapers and mail) are a good target for industrial action.

John Menzies have taken over several local delivery companies in the
Highlands.

That's impressive. My days of buying printed newspapers are long behind me
(I now pay for several newspapers, but read them on my iPad, so get instant
delivery wherever I am in the world).

"Tomorrows" papers, otherwise known as the First Edition, always used to
be available in Central London from about 10pm.

Unless there was big breaking story, hence the meme "Stop [the] Press".

I've downloaded and read the papers long before getting to the underground
sections of the TfL network.

Of course they will not be the latest edition on sale in the city centres.

One of the companies that was taken over by John Menzies used to have a
service where for quite a small charge they took a parcel to a central
distribution hub somewhere down in England where they could be
transferred to all the main carriers - they would also collect from there.

I can't remember what it was but there one major news story that broke
late in the evening and someone took the decision to hold back all the
late editions.

If they board at the vast majority of EL stations, the train will be above ground, with both mobile data and WiFi
Internet available. And they can always download stuff before going underground.

But, yes, Roland, we all know that there are places where the Internet is not available. You don't need to try and
demonstrate your unique variant of 'cleverness' in reminding us of that.

And of course there used to be no papers on Sundays on Lewis - there was
a big fuss about the Coastguard helicopter picking up newspapers on the
mainland on a Sunday whilst out on a training exercise.

That’s not bragging. In ye olde dayes you counted yourself lucky if
yesterday’s papers were available at a very high price whilst abroad. Now I
can be on holiday anywhere (almost anywhere for Roland) and can download my
papers. It’s a valid point to make.

Whereas nitpicking about the lack of availability of Internet on the EL
adds nothing to the conversation and is just your edge case detector being
overly sensitive again.

It's not a boast, just a simple statement of how I read the newspapers.
It's not like I was a non-traveller like you pretending to still be the
business traveller you were long ago.

Roland could have cited a much more relevant exception: people too poor to
afford to subscribe to on-line newspapers, but who still like to pretend to
be well-informed.

Another advantage of a digital sub (Times at least) is you can share it
with others in the household. No fighting over who gets to read the paper
first.

Actually you raise an interesting point there, when printed editions were
the main way for people to get news those who were too poor to regularly
purchase a paper could usually find a discarded one
lying about somewhere and while not as up to date as those who read them
at breakfast could follow events before they ceased to have relevance.
You cannot find second-hand online papers left on the seat of a bus or in a
bin and if energy prices do reach the high costs predicted then what were
insignificant costs to run things like routers and devices will become
significant for some. All those things that were once a £5 or £6 pounds a
year to run will be costing £20 something and four or five gadgets over a
year at that rate will start to look like real money, some may struggle to
stay online which nowadays if you are not can make life awkward.
