Today (I think) a stolen (?) car was captured driving fast through the
platforms at Cheshunt station
<https://twitter.com/newsforalluk/status/1415636043949232128?s=21>

It had earlier been involved in an incident involving dragging a police
officer along the road
<https://twitter.com/giggsclazz/status/1415637344787607553?s=21>

It drove through the barriers at a nearby level crossing (so likely that a
train was approaching), then turned onto the track

If they are prepared to do one of those, the other two are no surprise.

I wonder what the outcome would have been in third-rail territory.

When I first saw the video on the BBC news site of it driving between the
platforms, there appeared to be a bright flash at one point and I though the
car had shorted the third rail. Then I saw that it was at Cheshunt and
realised that this was not possible.

I would imagine a car that drove onto third rail track would be lucky to get
more that a few feet before one side or the other of it touched the
electrified rail and the bottom touched the running rails.

If the train drove through a *closed* barrier then it is very lucky that a
crash was avoided. On the other hand "drove through the barriers" might
simply mean "drove past the barrier, whether open or closed".

Never mind that, this is a very busy railway especially in the peak, carrying
Cambridge, Stansted Airport and Hertford East to Liverpool Street and Bishop's
Stortford to Stratford services, as well as LO trains from the south-facing bay.

There's a junction immediately south of the station leading to the Southbury
loop. A combination of a derailment ca sued by a collision with the car and the
pointwork could have let to a very serious situation.

Observe the third video linked in my OP, quoted above. The barriers are
closed across the road, the car drives through one of them, knocking it
off, then after hesitating briefly, turns left along the tracks through the
platforms. I don't know how close the nearest train was.

Yes, I hadn't seen the video when I posted my comment.

It was very lucky that the train which triggered the barrier closure was far
enough away that the signalman could stop it. For an AHB it's usually too
late by the time the barriers go down. For a CCTV crossing, the signaller
will check the crossing before clearing the signal, but if a car gets onto
the crossing after that, it's touch and go and relies on cab secure radio
and the driver doing an emergency stop.

Of course the train may have been coming in the opposite direction and so
*might* have missed hitting the car if it couldn't stop in time.

Interesting the car was still drivable when it was abandoned - I've seen a
video (not in a shareable place unfortunately) of it being driven (in
reverse!) along the track to an access point to be removed. It definitely
isn't being towed, winched or pushed!

It's a Discoverer, with lots of ground clearance and a sturdy suspension.

Not that I can find in the form of a car failing to outrun a train
along the line rather than the more usual getting wiped out while
going across a level crossing. The nearest seems to be various videos
of drivers trying to outrun trams in an attempt to turn in front of
them at crossroads. In the real world, cars tend not to catch fire as
portrayed in films.

Why abandon the vehicle then, why not keep driving until they reached a
road again? Or at least got near the next access point?

I don't know the area, but perhaps they spotted a footpath they could use to escape? They might have reckoned that the
police would be waiting for them at the next vehicular access point?

Perhaps they are not experienced off-roaders, and didn't know what to
expect their vehicle to be capable of.

And presumably it *was* capable, given the comment about its later
recovery.

Or they could have been anticipating a reception committee at the next
place a road crossed the tracks (were-ever that is, I'm not familiar
with the local geography in question)

Because if they carried on to the next road, the police would be
waiting. The ideal exit route, from the perpetrator's perspective, is to
be able to abandon the car somewhere where they cannot be overlooked and
where, having abandoned it, they can easily get way on foot.

Having had a look on Google Maps, these seem to be the locations:

Police try to remove driver from the car, the driver manages to drive
off:

Video https://twitter.com/giggsclazz/status/1415637344787607553
Location https://twitter.com/giggsclazz/status/1415637344787607553
Streetview https://goo.gl/maps/9z3XidkTLrYggHqj8

(The video appears to have been taken from the window above the Early
Bird Cafe)

In that video, the car is seen heading east, towards the station.
However, at the next video, it's approaching the line *from* the east,
and smashes through the barriers and turns south onto the track:

Video https://twitter.com/BigKyri/status/1415659120137588737
Location https://goo.gl/maps/7tKNXjpspzWKyhV98
Streetview https://goo.gl/maps/1sUhdKuj7RbbxsGC7

Why is it seen approaching from the east? Well, if you zoom out on the
map, you can see that the road is actually a cul-de-sac on the eastern
side of the level crossing. So my guess is the driver tried to go that
way, realised he couldn't, and turned around. But going back the way he
came, along Windmill Lane, would have taken him back to where the police
he had just escaped from would be waiting. So, instead, he turned onto
the railway line and went through the station:

Video: https://twitter.com/newsforalluk/status/1415636043949232128
Location https://goo.gl/maps/vSACs23zutMs8mqz7
(There's no Streetview of that, obviously!)

The car was then abandoned on the track, somewhere to the south of the
station:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-57849890
(scroll down, it's the bottom photo).

The higher res version of the photo is here:
https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/D811/production/_119431355_25aecf58-e7f7-47b3-a554-c1b53bcd01de.jpg
or https://tinyurl.com/y598wpdu

In that photo, there are some sheds on the left, a bridge in the
background, and what looks like a station platform just beyond the
bridge. Which looks to me as if it's here:

https://goo.gl/maps/ZHTpNrPduaGqu6at8

(Pan the map south and you can see the bridge which is in the distance
of the photo - I think it's the A121 - and, immediately beyond the
bridge, Waltham Cross station, which is the platform visible in the
photo).

At that point, it would have been easy to leave the track on foot,
either into the allotments or by crossing the track to Marsh Close.

I know. Disappointing, isn’t it. They should explode spectacularly! I
was wondering whether there had been cars in contact with the third rail
and what might have happened to them.
