That TBF is my attitude. I'll try to dodge if I have the opportunity but
eventually the reaper will win the game.

I've been around a lot of death, mainly because of the business my dad was in. All I know for sure is that no-one can know for sure how they'll be at the end (or near the end). There are so many factors: current age, general health, the situation in question (cancer v heart attack v serious accident), perception of quality of life ahead, specific events to live for, quantity and quality of loved ones around, and all manner of other things.

My mother died of Alzheimers, and for the last 5 years of her life, she
kept saying she wished she could end it. I don't want to go through that.

I've watched the decline of two in-laws, one from cancer,
one from dementia.

Both were horrid (the method of death and the in-laws
themselves) but I'd choose the cancer death just because of
the drugs available.

Yes, I'm quite taken with those.

I really do fancy a pre-war bike. I wonder how much they go for.

My dad died of liver cancer, and spent the last couple of months of his
life pretty much unconscious. He'd rallied briefly for their diamond
wedding but after that he'd taken to his bed once more and stayed there.
He could have had some more chemo but it made him feel awful and
wouldn't have given him much extra time so he decided not to.

Mum died of total renal failure. It took her a week to go, and she was
out of it after about four days. I think the pain was completely
controlled but she was delirious for a fair bit of the time.

I had a look. What seemed to be 'good' ones were about 5-6k.

Enough to stop me being impulsive :)

Death clearly is inevitable. I guess most of us are expressing a wish
to be able to decide when our quality of life is no longer acceptable.

I definitely don't want to just be alive for the sake of it. I
appreciate that one's expectations and horizons change, and what might
seem awful to me now would be fine in 20 years, but still, as the
other testemonies in this thread suggest, there definitely is a point
when people want to say "enough"

My F-I-L had something to say about this in the couple of years
immediately preceding his death. His view was that as you age,
your views on what constitutes an OK quality of life tends to evolve
toward accepting limitations that one's younger self would consider
unacceptable.

In other words, it's easier to be brave and say you'd end it all when
it gets to be too much, but when the time comes you find yourself
clinging firmly to life right up to the end. In any case, that was
his view and his particular experience bore it out.

Yes, that's what I was trying to say

Understood. But there are plenty of documented instances of people
who definitely do not want to cling to (what remains of their) life

Well yes, a 1935 350 Velocette with a rigid rear end and girder forks
isn't really much a match for a big bore CR250 2 stroke supermoto.
Different classes, although they are all in the 350 open class together.
