coast isn't included yet the channel islands are. Says it all.

french coast borders the channel than the med and thats before you include

Those are still parts of the republic, the difference being more akin
to the various inconsistent versions of English local government
(unitary authorities in some places, districts and counties in others
etc.). French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity. New Caledonia
seems to be France's version of the Isle of Wight from the POV of
local government.
