Nothing sad about that. I do it, having experienced link rot in
manufacturer's support websites. If you have a piece of equipment
and want to keep the user manual around, save the PDF because you
never know when the manufacturer may decide to do a housecleaning
and wipe that manual from their website.

It is usually Oracle (and ex Sun kit). The bastards shuffle and remove
stuff all the time these days.

Ah yes, I remember a bookshelf of yellow-orange books.

I designed (for small values of 'design') a switching regulator
circuit using nothing more than RS datasheets.

I would really love to dip my toes into switching regulator design.
Obviously they are very sophisticated now, but if I had lots of spare
time I'd like to experiment with designing my own crude version.

Actually recently came across a real-world issue at work, where an
LNA was showing excess AM noise riding on the RF carrier. The noise
spectrum had a very distinct 26 kHz pure sine wave peak on the noise
analyzer in the frequency domain.

We had a teleconference with the manufacturers, and I said "I have a
strong suspicion of where that anomalous noise peak is coming from,
but I'll let you say where _you_ think it's coming from". They were
quick to acknowledge that is was a dead cert to be coming from the
amplifier's switching power supply which runs at, you guessed it, ~
26 kHz.
