I deleted my account a year ago - don't miss it.

I've also uninstalled Twitter from my phone. It's quite liberating.

I just need to kick the Insta habit but there's too many brutalist
buildings (with cats on them) and railway pictures to look at.

I still read papers and magazines [1]. I have no evidence for this
assertion but I feel I take in the information better if it's not
electronic - ITMS.

I only signed up for a Twitter account at the start of the pandemic. I
tweeted a sort of 'diary of the plague year' in to the void and began
following some 'experts'.

Quite entertaining sitting on the sidelines watching Professors trying
to bite chunks out of each other. Also a few worthies whose politics
align roughly with mine. Yes, an echo chamber, but some of the comments
impinge on that - mostly with spittle flecked shrieks of moronic
ignorance TBF. Texas sharpshooters of data and appeals to dubious
authority by the sub-thread full in some cases.

I lapsed a bit during the summer once able to get out on a bike
occasionally and interact with the other VMCC old gimmers, face to
suitably distanced face.

I confess to being back with a vengeance with the Rise of Omicron[1].
There are a few virologists, epidemiologists and number crunchers who
aggregate the most interesting new developments. I meta aggregate them I
suppose, with the occasional comment from the perspective of a 'white
hat' that was at the coalface of public health back when TB was still
significantly around in the UK. Sometimes they need poking in attempt to
get them to look beyond their ivory towers.

Old enough now not to GAF what people think of me or say to me - in text
at least. I did have to issue a <PLONK> yesterday though (preceded by a
FRO). The whippersnapper probably had no idea what it meant.

[1] To be serialised on Prime starting Autumn 2022 as a reprise of what
may be to come then.

Removed account, stayed off a couple of months and created a new one.
Mainly due to some far flung friends that I have little chance of
seeing. Also some of those far flung friends directly contacted me to
make sure I was stll alive :-)

I post very very little on it.

I went the other way, started using twitter. Very handy for what is
happening in the world and on the roads. I learnt very quickly not to
post much there :-)

I find the ability to flick around, follow-up tangents, related
articles, etc. etc. while still leaving the original open in another
tab incredibly useful for news or other factual (particularly
scientific/medical) articles. If you're reading it in print form you'd
also need a computer next to you in order to get the most out of it.
At least, that's how I read things these days.

>I still struggle with Kindle for non-fiction.

It's certainly not ideal for anything that's not plain text, if that's
what you mean. Dictionary and wiki lookup are limited, to say the
least. And PDF rendering makes scrolling something of a pain,
particularly if you want enlarged text, e.g. when reading in poor
light (and without specs).

But for proper books it cannot be beaten, IMO.

>I've just cancelled "Bike" and "Ride", as I seemed to end up reading

I persevered with Bike for ages after we moved out of the UK, but when
you realise as it lands on your doorstep that you still haven't fully
read the previous two editions it's time to call it a day.

I still kept the 20-odd years of back issues for a long time, but
eventually realised that they were just taking up space so junked them
all as well.

have a look to see if your library has free access to e-magazines.
Pressreader and Libby are the two main providers.

We have Libby and it has all the Bauer stuff. It runs via an Android[1] App
and I mainly use it on a 10" tablet.

An issue of Ride takes about 10 minutes to read the couple of articles that
have a modicom of interest.

Libby has books as well but CBA on the tablet. CBA, with books generally
since spending half a decade in academia during the noughties.

A Readly subscription is cheap for the number of publications it
carries, so I download a lot and read at leisure. For the storage
occupied by older editions it's an easy option to just leave them
until time (or boredom) kicks in. Worth knowing that one account
allows for the other half to subscribe to her own selection.

Ditto. Plus, its easier to take with me and pull out at the cafe' or
while waiting at the doc's office, etc. The only downside is the fold.
Editors must want to spread a story across the fold, which blurs the
text and forces you to rustle the pages. Of course, reading online has
similar hassles.
A real benefit of papers is it entices me to read stories I wouldn't
read if it were online. Oh, and crossword puzzles. Excellent exercise
for the brain of a senile geriatric.

I have 2 - the Los Angeles Times, and National Geographic. The LAT is
relatively local and is one of the better investigative orgs worldwide.
The National Geographic I've had since 1958. It was about to expire, but
the world would fall apart if that happened.

via a local library is even cheaper - see my other post. Libby &
Pressreader are similar to Readly

Oops, I lose a point for misspelling Vivaldi...
This anyway:

Meanwhile over at https://vivaldi.net there are other utilities
including webmail which I am gradually using to usurp Googly

I gave up on FF decades ago when it seemed to be sucking all
functionality out my machine.
Most of FF 'innovations' were originally nicked from Opera anyway :-)

I don't have many options with Solaris :-)

It has had a few hicups over the years, but has been clawing it's way
back lately.

I suppose I just trust it more, either that or inertia.

The kindle is the one electronic reading mediaum I actually prefer to
use for reading.

Ride, went about 20 years ago, they just rehashed stuff every year.

Bike, I was only a irregular reader. I used to get it just for Dan Walsh
stuff.

Like Ace, I don't have easy access to an English content library. Yes,
I know I could get things from other, less salubrious, sources, but
Readly just works for me - I may have mentioned it previously: I am
inordinately lazy.

I've been a Private Eye subscriber for (IIRC) over 40 years. Of late,
I've been falling behind in my reading, as I used to read it at
lunchtime at work and I've lost the habit with WFH. But I shan't be
cancelling it.

I find anything with diagrams, so yeah a lot of non fiction. I like real books
and was saddened at how many I had to get shot of moving. Just replaced my aged
nook with a paperwhite.
