Hi All,

I am planning a little trip…

(With my Wrinkles Railcard)

Outbound 1/7 CHH to WEY (off peak Std Class).

Return 3/7 or 4/7 HAV to CHH.

I would need a cycle reservation for the Southampton to Havant bit.

Anyone know what the cost would be?

TIA

Chris

You shouldn't have to pay more than £13.45 in each direction for the bits of
the journey you can do on Southern. That's the super-off-peak discounted
return fare for anywhere between SOU and London Terminals via TBD. I really
don't know what's available for the SWR bit of the journey, or whether that
super-off-peak discount extends west of SOU.

You may find it's a lot faster to travel via HRH because the direct service
to SOU doesn't call anywhere between HRH and BAA. So for your outbound
journey you would buy a SOU=>HRH super-off-peak return and use the outbound
portion from CHH to get to HRH. There may be an option to take the BOG
stopping service and change at BAA and (maybe) FTN.

The return journey is at a weekend so you should count yourself lucky if
there is a train at all, bearing in mind you won't be able to take your
cycle on a replacement bus. Otherwise I don't think you would need the cycle
reservation on Southern, but I may be wrong on that.

Could you please translate into English ? We are not all familiar with
which three-letter code corresponds to each station, even in our local
areas.

It's the same with the airport codes. I know the ones I've flown into
and from.

Some airport codes are pretty obvious, but many are not. Examples of the
latter include ARN, EWR, FCO, IAD, IAH, LED, MCO, ORD, ORS, YOW, YYZ.

Pretty much every OJP (sorry), and info sites such as National Rail,
will accept the codes.

CHH = Christs Hospital (Chichester = CCH)

>It's the same with the airport codes.

There's an App For That. Seriously, it was one of the first I got back
in perhaps 2011. 'Airport ID IATA' gets almost all 5* ratings.

>I know the ones I've flown into and from.

I can't claim that; there are too many, and some are not noticeably
mnemonic. eg GGG for Longview, Texas. And then you have to remember that
John Wayne (Orange County) Airport is SNA, because it's in Santa Ana.
Worst of the majors is probably ORD for Chicago, but I can remember that
one. But how many know it was formerly Orchard Field?

Writing them in full the first time they're mentioned, particularly where
not obvious from the context, is useful. It’s something I try to do (if I
don't, please remind me!).

Similarly, if you want the average reader to understand what you're on
about, making them refer to an app or website is likely to be unhelpful.

On the other hand I sometimes use LON but I'm not totally sure which
plane ports this includes.

I assume by 'plane ports' you mean airports? LON is supposed to include
all London airports, so it definitely includes LHR, LGW, LCY, LTN and STN.
I wasn't sure if SEN would also be included, but this site says it is:

The one which trips people here up the most is East Midlands (airport) =
EMA; East Midlands (parkway station) = EMD.

I'm glad my sense of irony wasn't completely wasted. It took me ages to look

I'd suggest that the average reader is unlikely to know airport/station
codes beyond the popular ones and their local/frequently used ones; and
speaking for myself at least, if I don't know and they're not explained at
first use, the thread has to already be of interest to me in order for me
to look them up. If it's not, swipe to the next post.

I know the code for Lubbock, Texas, although I’ve never been there and know
nothing else about the place.

I once flew from Leeds-Bradford (LBA) to Lübeck (LBC), and I was interested
to know if there was an LBB.

I know EWR and ORD (in fact I’ve flown between those airports), but I don’t
know the others. In railway terms, MCO is Manchester Oxford Road, isn’t
it?

Yes, which is slightly more intuitive than Orlando International Airport.
And who'd guess that FCO is Leonardo da Vinci airport, Rome? [Not that
Leonardo spent much time in Rome, or produced any notable work in his three
years there.]

Another candidate for losing its mnemonic link after becoming known by a
nickname. It's really Rome-Fiumicino. Sister to Rome-Ciampino (which is
where the black helicopters are based).

Unless I'm mistaken, you read on a smartphone (so haven't got your
boy-scout goat herder badge yet). It'd be two clicks to pull up an app
to translate them. Or are phones not as easy to use as people claim?

In this instance the OP is clearly asking for local knowledge otherwise
he could get the Anytime prices himself from any number of sources. It's
therefore more likely that such locals will know the codes, although I'm
happy to admit that Christ's Hospital is a new one for me.

Nevertheless, my first port of call in an attempt to assist would be:

https://www.brfares.com/!fares?orig=CHH&dest=WEY

....where CCH is quicker to type anyway!

Off peak period return (via Barnham) £22.75, should be OK not to use
the Weymouth-Havant leg.

No bike reservations possible, only two spaces, it's not clear what
happens when the third bike arrives.

IAD = Dulles, IAH = Houston, ARN = Arlanda (Stockholm), MCO = Orlando,
been to all of those as well as EWR and ORD. Can't remember which Rome
airport though.

I've used all of those multiple times, apart from LED. That one might be
easier if the city it serves was still called Leningrad.

There's actually a full set [A-Z] of LB's.

More alphabet soup: CBG is both Cambridge station and airport; SOU a
match for Southampton, NCL for Newcastle, (although the airport stations
are SOA & APN respectively), LTN x2 for Luton. Been to the first nine.

Falls apart a bit for Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
