Yeah, that worked brilliantly in the old USSR.

The only time I've had that happen at SF when the person couldn't find
my item was when he admitted that he thought a T square (for use with
plasterboard) was small item and not something packed in a 5 foot long
box. He hadn't been checking the large items in the pile waiting for
people to pick up.

SF usually send me a text at store opening time if ordered out-of-hours
or within 10 minutes telling me that I can pick up the item if ordered
with opening hours. Their new(ish) system is working a lot better than
it was a few years ago.

The impression I get is that some items are flagged on their database
as "we've got loads of those, and they are easy to find", so they say
immediately [most recently over a hour before their 7am opening]
"ready for pickup".

But when you get to the store they do the same as for a walk-in customer
and go rummaging around backstage.

Fewer items are actually pre-picked, and left in a little bag on the
"collections" shelf.

I've never yet had an item they had over-sold, leaving me empty-handed,
but I seem to quite frequently buy the only one they [sometimes having
to try three nearby stores] have in stock, so it's helpful if they
reserve that for me until I can get here.

Having said that, the hard-to-pick item I mentioned above was an example
of "last one in stock".

A friend who had a key to a mutual friend's house, to check up on it
while he was working abroad, suggested changing every lightbulb for the

if he ever did it.

I had that problem at City Plumbing the other week - I bought a CH
circulating pump online, went in to pick it up and they couldn't find
it. They managed to get one in the next morning.
