Got a "software update" system message to install Big Sur 11.6 on my Mac
running 11.5.2 .

I think it's been out about a week now. Safe to install now- or better
to wait for 11.6.1 or 11.6.2?

I'm always of the opinion that if you don't have a problem, waiting a
bit longer is probably a good idea.

I only upgraded to Catalina a month ago. Feature and interface improvements in
macOS have become so marginal as to be meaningless to me. The only reason I
upgrade is to get the security improvements.

"Feature and interface improvements" stopped with Mac OS 7 / 7.5. Since
then it's mostly just been more and more silly gimmickry added that
most people never use, let alone want.

I installed it when it was released and have had no issues. I have a 15 inch

If you´ve got an M1 Mac and want to watch DVDs better wait.
After the update the DVD Player no longer works with my M1 mini.
(And nope, it´s not the hardware or a particular DVD. Both work fine on an
Intel Mac).

How do you figure? I use a lot of the more modern stuff. System Services and
Quick Actions are two excellent features. Little touches like snapping windows
is something I use a lot, and full screen / Spaces. Mac OS 7.5 did not have a
Dock or other similar launcher...

If you want to get a look back at Mac OS System 7 here is an online emulator:

http://jamesfriend.com.au/pce-js/pce-js-apps/

There is a lot which Apple had already done there, but we have come a long way
(and taken a few steps backward). Heck, back in that era menus did not even
stay down unless you held the mouse, you could neither Hide nor Minimize apps,
etc.

OK. If that is what you get from it that is fine. I cannot remember which
updates came with Catalina off hand, but I think that is when they *finally*
got rid of iTunes and the bloat it was. They added more window management but
I use Moom which does what macOS does (mostly) and more. Really though not
sure what else I really found with the UI.

Oh, the System Services were in the same order in the app menu and the right
click menu. Never made any sense for them not to be!

Not really, 7.0 was the only operating system Apple hawked as "Rock Solid".

Well, WTH. I did a Time Machine backup, d/l and installed.

As it installed after the restart, I got a black screen with the white
Apple logo and progress bar underneath. The bar advanced slowly, the
screen then blacked out and the progress bar restarted and advanced a
little further.

Must have repeated this loop 10-12 times with small incremental progress
bar advances. I don't recall previous OS updates going through this many
cycles to install.

Finally got done, all seems OK.

And it was not. And when apps crashed, the system crashed. Good times.

Yeah, Mac OS X was way better after v10.0.

It is ALWAYS better to wait for the X.X.1 or X.X.2 version. Or even later.
Any software. The initial X.0.0 will ALWAYS have issues.

Still on iPadOS/iOS 14.7.1 here. No way am I installing 15.0.0. Maybe
around 15.1.2.

I will NEVER understand what the “X.0.0 was released today, I have to
install this NOW” is. Let others be the unpaid testers. I have better
things to do.

All software will always have issues, but version X.0 usually has more
of them. Part of the reason is the ridiculous new method to release a
new version (and new hardware) every year, which means everything these
days is rushed out rather than properly tested. :-(

Nonsense.

Any Software version will have issues, and it is no more common at .0
than .5, at least not with Apple.

Your loss. But no one cares what YOU do, but claiming it is some sort
of virtue to wait is not just silly, but also completely wrong.

Millions of people have been testing iOS 15 for many months. There are
features in the new versions that people want and will use and will be
of significant benefit to them, why should they wait?

It's annoying. I wished Apple and other companies would stop doing that.
