To be fair, if you asked nearly any iPhone user about Tor browser they'd
give you a blank stare since it's highly likely that they have never
heard of it. Nor have they ever heard of WebKit. These are consumer
devices and users are not expected to be technical experts. They are
happy within the walled garden (or whatever you want to call it) and
privacy and security while browsing is not a big concern.

Occasionally, a user that has switched from Android to iOS will realize
that they can no longer do certain things, or run certain apps, on iOS,
but someone that has never used Android will not be aware of the
limitations of iOS.

There are also occasionally things that you can do on an iPhone that
aren't possible on Android; one place where I have run into this is when
doing screenshots. Sometimes I want an image of a membership card to
store in Apple Wallet or Google wallet but the store or other
organization doesn't want you to do this so on Android the ability to do
a screenshot is turned off by the app developer but iOS doesn't give app
developers that capability.

I also recently ran into a set of devices for which there is an iOS App
but no Android app <https://apps.apple.com/us/app/silvair/id1281447717>.
Contacting the company they told me that if I signed an NDA they would
send me the APK for the beta version of the Android app.

These are Apple nutcases on this newsgroup who have never heard of the Tor
Browser and who have no idea that WebKit exists - not the average person.

It's OK that they know nothing about Apple but then why do they blame the
Tor Project for iOS having no privacy (because WebKit is highly insecure)?

Because Apple decides what will run on iOS and what won't run, the result
is there are thousands upon thousands (upon thousands!) of very useful apps
that run on all the other platforms (even macOS!) that can't run on iOS.

You can't even run Ungoogled Chromium on iOS so it's not just the Tor
Browser but these Apple nutcases have no idea that WebKit even exists.

This was covered in gory detail in the Android newsgroup where it's
actually possible to screenshot over the protection of Android.

You just have to use a mirroring program (for example, on Windows) which
doesn't respect the permission lock that Android apps will respect.

It's the same with PDF permission locks where you just have to know enough
about it to use a PDF reader that doesn't respect those permission locks.
> I also recently ran into a set of devices for which there is an iOS App

As I said, there are thousands upon thousands (upon thousands) of apps
which work on _all_ other platforms with the exception of iOS because it's
Apple alone who decides what will or will not work on the iOS systems.

That app is a "Silvair Lighting commissioning app", whose role is
"commissioning Bluetooth mesh lighting networks in commercial spaces."

It's highly unlikely that this functionality doesn't exist on Android but
I'm not sure what that sentence even means in terms of looking it up first.

https://play.google.com/store/search?q=Silvair%20Lighting%20commissioning%20app&c=apps

Over 30 Android apps show up from that search using those search terms, but
I don't know if any of them fit the functionality you seek for Android.

Do they?

> Contacting the company they told me that if I signed an NDA they would
> send me the APK for the beta version of the Android app.

As a general truth, there will never be any app functionality on iOS that
isn't on Android because iOS is greatly restricted and Android is not.

On the other hand, there will always be thousands upon thousands (upon
thousands!) of app functionalities on Android that are not on iOS (because
Apple alone determines what app functionality you can install on iOS).

In this specific case, not only does the app exist (it's just in beta
apparently) but the functionality offered may exist from another outfit.

Can you give me better search terms to find if the functionality is on
Android because it's almost certain nothing is on iOS that isn't on Android
(simply because nobody can stop people from installing any Android app).

I was reading this article moments ago where the video screen captioned as
"A CBS Sunday Morning segment where correspondent David Pogue joins Titanic
enthusiasts who pay to ride in OceanGate's specially designed submersible
vehicle. Originally broadcast November 27, 2022." was totally black.
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/06/submarine-missing-near-titanic-used-a-30-logitech-gamepad-for-steering/

Where you would have expected to see that video was this error instead.
"Video unavailable. https://youtu.be/29co_Hksk6o
The uploader has not made this video available in your country."

I've seen that a lot and I normally don't watch the video but having read
about this thread from a.f.n talking about it, I installed Win10 clipgrab.

That clipgrab app had no problem downloading "YouTube: A visit to RMS
Titanic" at "1080p (HD)" as a 182MB "A visit to RMS Titanic.mp4" video.

So the app does more than just enable you to see age-restricted videos.
Clipgrab can also enable you to see those country-restricted videos too.

I just use a VPN for that sort of thing.

How is VPN going to consistently work when you have no idea the set of
countries which are banned from viewing by the uploader of the video?

To date it's consistently been US sources so pretty easy to do.

If it's elsewhere and I really, really want to see it, I'll figure it
out and VPN there.

What you're describing for Apple is what most would call a clusterfuck.

But if that's the only way you can do it on Apple, so be it. Have fun.

Meanwhile, the rest of us will be using the same simple method that works
for every video everywhere whether it's age restricted or country limited.

using a vpn is hardly a clusterfuck on any platform, and it's no more
difficult on a mac than anything else either.

It's a clusterfuck that isn't needed on any of the non-apple systems.

Not really. These edge cases are of little import to the vast majority
of smartphone users, Android or iOS.

One way to bypass geographic restrictions (if they happen to you) is to
use the yt-dlp "--geo-bypass" option (which is designed for that purpose).

Here's an explanation of the yt-dlp geographic restriction bypass option.
https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2022/how-download-mp4-youtube-every-time

Here is their helpful example of the syntax to use that geographic bypass.
yt-dlp -f 137+140 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ -o %%(title)s.%%(ext)s
--geo-bypass Bypass geographic restriction via faking X-Forwarded-For HTTP header
-F List available formats of each video.
-f Video format code
-o Output filename template

yt-dlp works on linux
yt-dlp works on windows
yt-dlp works on android
yt-dlp works on the mac
yt-dlp can't work on iOS

Note that the geo-bypass option is actually set as the default in yt-dlp.
Maybe that's why iOS users always have to employ those ridiculous clusterfucks.

How do you explain why all these clearly rather useful utilities & programs
are ported to every major platform... (mac, windows, linux and android)...

Except iOS?

What's so very different about iOS?

it's one way, except that it's a clusterfuck compared to using a vpn,
which can be activated with a tap and works on all videos, web sites
and apps (until deactivated). however, those who insist on doing things
in the most convoluted method possible can still do that, even on ios.

It seems that in your desire to come up with those iOS clusterfucks, you
forgot (or never knew) that a VPN download still needs a google account
while the yt-dlp solutions (on all platforms except iOS) don't need it.

Having an account is a clusterfuck? Who would imagine!
Having an anonymous account is a clusterfuck? Don't say!

Maintaining the moving ball of yt-dlp seems to be more of a clusterfuck.

The things listed by whateverhisnymwas are not used by 99.99% or more of
Android users. And would not be used by iOS users either.

Workarounds abound for iOS users who really want those things (including
buying a good, cheap, used Android phone for the narrow use cases).

Apple's restrictions or app developer apathy. Don't like them, march on.

very little is restricted. claims that apple locks things down are
easily debunked myths. it's almost always developer apathy or
incompetence. any time someone can't figure out how to do something,
they blame apple rather than their own lack of skill.

it's also not unique to apple. *every* platform has restrictions, and
in this case, video downloading, google prohibits the same thing apple
does, but somehow that must be ignored to fit the narrative.

if there's insufficient demand for a given app, regardless of platform,
it's not worth the effort to bother writing it. no platform can do
everything in every situation, despite the trolls claims to the

All you have on iOS are clusterfucks - which don't even work on VPN.
You're lying about the account because Google knows VPN better than you do.
The question isn't whether or not you're lying - but WHY you're lying.

Are you trying to protect Apple's soiled honor because you don't like that
yt-dlp works on linux
yt-dlp works on windows
yt-dlp works on android
yt-dlp works on the mac
yt-dlp can't work on iOS

If you claim you don't need to download geo-limited or age-restricted
videos, there still are thousands of other useful capabilities which are
ported to each of the operating systems on the newsgroup line - except iOS.

Here's another that you need to use one more Apple clusterfuck for.
https://www.google.com/search?q=why+isn%27t+the+tor+browser+on+iOS

The Tor project is ported to linux
The Tor project is ported to windows
The Tor project is ported to android
The Tor project is ported to the mac
The Tor project can not be ported to iOS

https://support.torproject.org/tormobile/tormobile-3/
"Apple requires browsers on iOS to use something called Webkit, which
prevents Onion Browser [or any other browser] from having the same privacy
protections as Tor Browser"

If you say that the onion browser clusterfuck is "almost privacy", then I
can give you another, and another, and another and another useful
capability which is ported to every operating system except for iOS.

You will never run out of excuses for why iOS can't do what the others do.
But that doesn't change that everyone else is doing those things - but you.

you will never stop lying. there are no excuses.

no os does everything, nor should it. that would make for a not very
good os.

ios can easily do many things other oses can't do and other oses can do
things that ios can't.

this whole 'only ios can't' is bullshit and you know it.

> But that doesn't change that everyone else can do those things - but you.

oh, i can easily do 'those things', including on ios, and in ways that
are *easier* than the clusterfuck methods you insist are the only
acceptable way (which remains an option if i had any interest in
inefficient methods).

the problem is *you* can't do those things and don't want to learn how.

unlike you, i know how to find answers when i need to do something.

all you can manage to do is mindlessly bloviate and demonstrate just
how little you actually know.

It's not the number of apps. It's the number of people who would use
such apps. Very, very, very few.

iOS has a Webkit requirement - the Tor project is just too lazy to
comply with that. Sue me. Or Apple. Or better yet the Tor project.

You guys are screaming loud for something that represents 1 out 10,000

Do you really think only 1 out of 10K people care about browser privacy?

Why is it always only the iOS users who can't have what everyone else gets?
