.... and Africa in particular.
The time they bury copper are long over. Fiber optical cables are the
name of the game.

For private use landlines are a thing of the past. Millennials and
younger do not have have landlines anymore.

With landlines the concept is to call a place and hoping that someone
picks up the phone.

Mobile is the concept of calling a specific person irrespective where
this person is.

That is why I wrote our Federal Government did not plan such tests. We

This is not a US-NG.

There is no other viable alternative. While radio and TV in theory can
be self powered in an emergency situation, few have self powered TVs
to receive the warning on and radio is really only viable for notifying
cars.

That’s wrong too with texts on the cellphone system.

Problem is some dinosaurs leave their cellphone turned off.

Lately most threads are of little use to anyone. Many or

that says something about Win10.

It's simply facts. It has nothing to do with a superiority
complex. I happen to think that Euro cultures are generally
healthier and more mature than the US. But the US, since
WW2, is the super-power. People need to know English.
No one needs to know French or German. (Much to the
chagrin of the French. :) That's not bragging. And it's not
my fault. I didn't make anyone learn English. It's just
the way things are. Even you see it that way. You just
described English as a "universal language". If people want
to be upscale hipsters they need to speak English.

Ironically, in large part the US is so powerful and affects
other countries so much because the Germans tried to take
over the world. If not for that the US might still be a country
of insular hayseeds. Instead we're a country of imperialistic
hayseeds. :)

|

It wouldn't be on-topic. I understand a bit of Spanish. No
Mongolian. No German. No Balian. (I don't even know what
language they speak.) Since only the poster would likely
understand such a post, it would no longer be a discussion.
(I actually studied Spanish for 4 years, but I've rarely had
occasion to use it, so I've forgotten. Everyone else speaks
English!)

That's what I'm trying to clarify: Feeling in the minority is
not an act of aggression by the majority. It's an expression
of competitiveness on your part. Imagine being a Syrian,
Palestinian, or any of the other myriad ethnicities that the
first world mostly ignores. How often do we think about them?
How many of us bother to learn their languages? Do you have
a superior attitude because you don't know about all those
people? No. We all relate with the world we find ourselves in.

Why wasn't Germany given to the
Jews after WW2? Because Germans are white, with a long
history in Europe. The land England "gave" to the Jews
belonged only to 3rd-world Arabs. So it was "free for the
taking"... and it's still being taken. And still few are complaining,
as rich American yuppies from NYC play out their roots trip
on recently stolen Palestinian land.
So before you complain about not being top rung on the ladder
you might want to consider that you actually are pretty close
to the top.

|

Ah, the famous German sense of humor. Sorry, I should
have explained that that was actually a mildly self-
deprecating joke. It was a way of acknowledging the
crassness of American culture... Never mind... Got any
good Mongolian jokes?

In English words like 'everyone' are understood to mean "very nearly
everyone" in conversation.

many years ago, there was a news report about a homeless person who had
a cellphone and a laptop, which he recharged using mains power outlets
found on the outside of buildings, and used it to get on the internet
and find himself a job.

Why should I leave my phone on? Mine is turned off unless I want to
call someone, or expect a call from someone. Why should I leave it on
to get a random spam call?

We went to the store this morning and I left my phone at home. Most of
the time it lays on the table in the living room of my house, and since
I turn the ringer to vibrate, I don't know if it rings or not.

Unlikely. The US was becoming a world power well
before WW1 with China, Japan, the Philippines etc.

The USA is in fact far less imperialistic than europe was.

I managed to end up in Sydney with the battery in my cellphone
flat. Couldn't find anywhere to charge it even in the main central
railway station tho I didn't look all that hard for power points in
the country line waiting rooms used by cleaners etc.

Couldn't find any external power points walking around the
city. Lucked out when I asked someone I stopped in the
street, he told me that the local TAFE, post high school
trade training operation had USB charger outlets in the
big rooms full of computer terminals for the students.

Some of us have moved with the times and do all calls on the cellphone now.
