It's a rare day that I talk to someone on my cell phone.

Except for spammers, it's a rare day that I get any calls on my land

I've never seen a homeless person using a cell phone. I suppose it's
possible that some of them do have one, and I've just never seen a
homeless person using his, but if I were homeless, a cell phone would be
the last place I'd want to spend what little money I had.

To you, not to me. To me "everyone" means "everyone."

Unsurprising given what an obnoxious arsehole you are.

Not all of us are like that.

I have only ever seen a couple of homeless people
in my life and one of them I have seen a few times
was quite literally barking out loud at times.

Beats walking over to the drug dealer's place.

I use my cell phone for several things:

1. To read Kindle books.

2. Mostly if I'm not in my home town, to use Google Maps

3. To check the weather

4. To Look something up on Wikipedia

5. To ask Google a question

6. Mostly if I'm not in my home town, to make or confirm restaurant
reservations

7. To change the settings on my thermostat (I rarely need to do this)

8. For Uber (I rarely need to do this)

9. To adjust my hearing aids (I rarely need to do this)

10. As a camera (again, rarely, and only if I'm traveling and don't have
my camera at the moment)

11. As a flashlight (again, rarely)

12. As a compass (again, rarely)

13. The thing for which I most rarely use it is as a telephone.

many of them have money. some aren't actually homeless.

A 2013 South African study found that beggars could make the
equivalent of $18 per day begging in South Africa.

A 2008 report stated that some Oregon beggars outside a Wal Mart
make $100k per year / $300 per day.

A beggar in Oklahoma City, OK makes $60k per year, or $30 per
hour average.

An actual homeless person who runs a Blogspot blog stated that he
makes between $15-$30 per hour, but it is usually closer to $15 per
hour on average. In addition, he mentions that it is very un-steady
income, meaning that sometimes, he can beg all day and only make $60.

Another article reported that they talked to several local beggars
who said they would make the equivalent of $13 per hour.

One other thing I use my phone for and forgot to mention: if I'm away

She's informing you that there are problems with your immigration
documents. You (like me) must have an area code with a large number of
Chinese.

The boat people crossing the Atlantic or the Mediterranean to Europe are
homeless and they often have a phone. That's how they ask for rescue
when the gasoline or the motor in the boat gives up.

I don't know if they have smartphones or plain phones. A plain phone
battery can last a week being on full day. A smartphone on the other
hand has a GPS, which they need to cross the sea and possibly the land.
They don't have to have it on all day, though.

Not all of them, of course.

Does Ff have a way to list them, see what resources they use?

I think we're insular rather than imperialistic. We don't NEED to learn
foreign languages, especially since the Brits already planted English
all over the world.

> By the way, you will all have to learn Chinese :-P

We tried. Honest. When I tried using google translate to guess what
Mandarin word I just said, 9 out of 10 times it guessed wrong. That's
discouraging. I now realize that in real life the intonation doesn't
have to be perfect, that context matters a lot -- just like in English,
but the motivation is gone. Plus even pinyan is a problem -- I have to
use stronger reading glasses to recognize the diacritical marks :-( I
also tried to learn Italian via Duolingo, which is a VERY good site, but
it just seemed like too much trouble for something that I really didn't
need.

Stuff like that doesn't matter while you're in school, and languages are
a lot easier when you're a grandchild rather than a grandma :-(

There are a few "homeless" people are just scammers. They get up at the
end of a "hard day's work" conning people into giving them money, walk
around the corner, and drive off in a brand new Mercedes. :-\

I got one such presidential alert when I was visiting Ottawa.
2018-09-21. Scared me shit. It was a tornado warning.

The only one I got in my life.

It was scary in many ways, one of them was "The president warning me, a
visitor! What, I don't have a president"

The fact that it called "Presidential alert" is disgusting to me, by the
way.
