Hmmm.

It is still listed at:

<quote>
OpenVMS V9.1-A EAK for x86 (x86-64 Limited Early Adopters Kit)
....
September-December

Hardware support for the HPE DL380 (Intel) server
....
</quote>

Missing mention of DL380 for 9.2?

Missing removal of mention of DL380 for 9.1?

Or the feature got removed between 9.1 and 9.2?

The 10th generation HPE ProLiant DL380 should extremely easily run
VMware ESXi or VirtualBox with no problem at all.

Thus virtual OpenVMS 9.2 should run on them without any problem.

At least that's my understanding.

Yes, read in the roadmap:
////
OpenVMS V9.2-2 for x86
Additional hypervisor and cloud platform support driven by customer
requirements
Additional bare metal server support driven by customer demand
////

"Additional" means more bare metal server, or first bare metal servers?

And what about EAK-baremetal? As known by the builder_guide, the
engineering did put on bare metal. Not supported yet, but up and running.

So: for the ones who will not be able to offer solutions except on bare
metal, why not get them able to anticipate, getting some sort of EAK?

There's a posting from Jan-Erik from 5-May-2022 which quotes an email
VSI sent out on the same day.
(<snews://news.cis.dfn.de:563/t51g33$q73@dont-email.me>)

From this email:

> After analyzing customer feedback, VMS Software Inc. has made the decision to move hypervisor support on OpenVMS V9.2 to the top of our priority list.
[...]
> Better hypervisor support will mean being able to run OpenVMS on any x86 hardware, which is a priority for many customers. However, this also means that bare metal support will be delayed – although eventually the DL380 and several other server models are planned to be supported.

Please note the wording "eventually".

So no, V9.2 does not (yet) support bare metal.

But David's DL380 sounds quite fine for e.G. VMware - 14 cores only
require a single ESXi license.

Hans.

Sure, but the restrictions of the free licenses don't fit every need,
e.g. for small companies. (Don't now whether there is a special word in
English what we call one-person-company in German, a company run by the
owner without employees).

Don't think there's any restriction on company size for ESXi, just that you
won't get any manageability features without paying for vCentre etc.

In the UK a sole trader can have employees, it's the ownership that is "solo"
not the number of people working in the business.

PLLC, LLP, or LLC would be formed, most likely.

Or S or C Corporations, for those folks with certain business plans.

Probably not a sole proprietorship. Not for that group of folks, nor
for suchlike.

Regulations can and do vary within the US, and elsewhere, of course.

Should the acquisition of VMware by Broadcom complete, the licensing
will reportedly be shifting to a subscription model. What else changes,
we shall learn.

Correct regarding company size - but lacking manageability features are
a "restriction" as well, even for small companies. If a single person
has to sell, deliver, administrate, and run the internal network, a
VMware partnership (with a few internal use licenses) pays off quickly.

I assume these are various legal forms.

Here around, a "one-person-company" can have one of several legal forms,
but these forms all can have employees as well. So its a designation for
any form of company run by a single person.

re: VMware and Broadcom acquisition - interesting article on Hock Tan (new
name you likely will hear more about)
erprise-software-stack/>
"And Tan is legendary for making expensive acquisitions, cutting costs
relentlessly, and making them pay for themselves. And Tan wants a bigger and
more distributed software business than the Symantec security and CA systems
management businesses it has spent a fortune on and still squeezed a lot of
profit from."

Loosely translated - while many view VMware costs as already very high,
expect VMware costs to increase in the future.

My experience is that said manageability features really only come into
play when you are managing across multiple physical (ESXi) hosts.

Meaning if you have a single physical (ESXi) host, chances are quite
good that you won't miss anything.

That being said, as soon as you want to do things across multiple
physical (ESXi) hosts, you will quickly appreciate what vSphere /
vCenter can provide.

I'll throw out there that VMware has some small business licensing that
has been compelling for some people I know. E.g. vSphere / vCenter to
manage three physical (ESXi) hosts.

with local government users, vmware are following the citrix route, they're good
but costs will drive customers away ...

I agree viciously, but you won't get the benefit of being able to live migrate
guests between hosts, to allow e.g. host updates without downtime, or load
balancing.

I forget what the 'starter' licencing options are, nowadays you could probably
get a good bang for buck starting with just a couple of high core-count servers,
but a decade or more ago, cores per socket was low, so you needed more servers
and soon got into enterprise prices.

Agree - its like Oracle, Sun and yes, even DEC VMS models of the past.

1- Start with something new
2- Something new catches on and gets popular
3- Execs get greedy and raise prices
4- Customers will put up with higher prices for awhile because they like the
new product
5- Execs get even greedier and continue to raise prices
6- Customers put up with price increases, but for new projects, they start
looking at alternatives for new projects
7- Over time, the previously something new product becomes legacy and
non-strategic in Customer environment

Oracle is at step 6.

Yes, history continues to repeat and all to often, past mistakes are
ignored.
