Hi,

I have an old tablet running Android 4.4.2, which I reset to factory. I
want to use it as wall clock.

It doesn't have the google play store thing. Wait, it does have it, but
I'd prefer not to register the tablet.

Instead, it has "1Mobile Market", which worked when it was new but not
now, the server must be dead.

So to load anything I must do it from a local file. How?

For example from APKPure.

Is that <https://m.apkpure.com/>?

I'm looking at this app:

<https://m.apkpure.com/transparent-clock-and-weather/com.droid27.transparentclockweather>

If I click to download on APKs the x86 variant, instead it downloads a
..xapk file.

I copy that to the download folder on the tablet, but how can I install it?

I can see the file in "ES File Explorer" (comes installed from factory),
but double tapping on the file does nothing. It does not recognize .xapk
extension.

Yes, install from unknown sources is activated.

Ok, looking instead here:

<https://m.apkpure.com/transparent-clock-and-weather/com.droid27.transparentclockweather>

This one downloads an APK, and it does install. It wants permissions to
access "google billing services". That's fine, playstore is not
registered and never will be >:-)

But the widget runs complains: it says to update Google Play Services,
which is not going to happen, in a notification refreshed every while.

Hum... I no longer can enter the adjustments of the widget (it opens the
system clock app instead, so that I can set alarms). And there is no
associated application listed.

Ok, uninstall, install again, and change touch actions: when touch
clock, adjust widget.

Works! :-D

I now have a wall clock that adjusts automatically. I would like one
that fills the screen, though. Ideas?

Not quite.

In this situation, the tablet not registered to Google, there are no
automatic updates. I don't care about this, but it happens that the
tablet does not save the WiFi password: after a reboot it is lost. This
is important to me, because without WiFi the clock wanders off, and I
want to use the tablet as wall clock.

This could be a bug, or intentional (I doubt it, though). So I will have
to register this old tablet again, and hope it still updates (it has
Android 4). Or accept I have to type the wifi password after an
accidental power off (the battery doesn't last long).

Does your Old Tablet have GPS?
Can your clock app sync with GPS?
If you'll not have any WiFi connection, then there'll be no "tracking".
(Altho', "tracking" a device hanging on a wall......)

Nope. It was a very cheap one, the first one I bought to find out if I
could make use of a tablet :-)

> Can your clock app sync with GPS?

I don't know, but as it has no GPS chip, it is pointless. If it had the
chip, I could try another clock app instead.

> If you'll not have any WiFi connection, then there'll be no "tracking".
> (Altho', "tracking" a device hanging on a wall......)

I need the WiFi on so that the clock is synced. Problem is, it forgets
the wifi password. Suspicion is, it saves that data in the google
profile. I know that in the past, when I used this tablet for real, I do
not remember trouble with the wifi credentials.

I do not want to register the thing on principles: it is absurd to login
to google just to put a clock on the kitchen wall.

It appears I will have to login so that it remembers the wifi password,
but I do not want to use one of my true accounts because then a passerby
would have access to the account by using that tablet, which can not be
locked in order to display the time. So it will have to be a dummy account.

It is stupid, on a matter of principles...

Could it be that in the backup settings the tablet is set to backup
settings to Google, but that without an account, the tablet fails to
save the Wi-Fi password locally? Just guessing.

Or you could install a password manager, so that inputting the
password is easier. Half joking, especially because it's probably hard
to find a password manager for such an old Android version.

There are numerous full screen clocks in the play store. Not sure how
that translates to apkpure that you can use. I use Night Clock by Ned
Fox as a nightstand clock.

On your computer:
1. Find the app on the Google Play store. Copy the URL.
2. Go to https://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/
3. Paste the URL into the box and click on "Generate Download Link"
4. Copy the APK that is generate over to the tablet and install it, and
hope that the app works on your device.

Many apps work fine this way, even on devices where the app doesn't even
show up in the Google Play store for a specific device that has Google
Play. I.e. I wanted Samsung Pay on a Galaxy A51 and was surprised to
learn that Samsung no longer supports Samsung Pay on A series phones
(even though some of these phone have MST (Magnetic Secure Technology)
which is used _only_ for Samsung Pay. So I downloaded the APK,
side-loaded it, and it works fine.

Probably a lot of more recent Android apps won't work on such an old
version of Android, but it could not hurt to try.

As I said before, Carlos, I don't think you own the adult comprehensive
skills necessary to comprehend that is a completely incorrect assumption, in
my experience.

This screenshot proves that Google Play App "can" update apps that were
_never_ downloaded (or installed) via the Google Play App, and, in fact, the
phone has _never_ had a Google Account "registered" to it (because I care
about privacy).

Again, Carlos, I believe you don't own the necessary adult cognition to
comprehend that everyone else but you can save their Wi-Fi password even
when their Android device has no "registration" whatsoever to Google Play.

For privacy reasons, I have my Wi-Fi access point set to not broadcast, and,
again for privacy reasons, I have my phone Wi-Fi set to random MACs and I
have my phone Wi-Fi set for privacy to disconnect when I leave the house and
then to never reconnect automatically (and other things - all for privacy),
and yet, even after lots of tweaks, I have no problem with my Wi-Fi
"remembering" my Wi-Fi access point passphrase.

I admit I don't know what's "different" about your tablet, but rest assured
there has never been a Google Account "registered" on my Android phone, and
it seems to be able to do all the things you seem to not be able to do.

Given you've proven (in the FOSS thread for example) to be an utter moron, I
would use Occam's Razor to assume that it's not your tablet that has the
problem given all your assumptions appear, based on my experience, to be
dead wrong.

Interestingly, I say this to you because even as you're a despicable person,
I'm not. I'm a kind, caring, and helpful person - so I don't want you to
think the problem you're having is due to the tablet. It's not. It's you.

Personally, even though you're a despicable person Carlos, I'm interested in
your problem set, partially because I never once thought about how an
Android device clock is synced.

Most of us, of course, let the carrier sync it for us (I suspect), but in
your case, without a SIM card, you're left to sync the clock some other way.

On Windows (which also doesn't have a SIM card), my computer seems to have
the correct time - but I never thought of how it did that all by itself.
(Maybe it doesn't - maybe I just "think" it's the correct time. Dunno.)

Point is there must be another way to sync your clock.

The way I'd approach this problem is the same way I'd approach any problem,
which is I'd try to understand how the think is supposed to work first.

To do that, I'd ask what normally syncs the clock on any computing device
that doesn't have a SIM card?

Anyone know enough about that to help Carlos out?

I want to repeat I don't have any Google Account registered on my phone and
my phone has multiple PITA privacy settings for my Wi-Fi and yet, even after
all that added privacy stuff (e.g., I have auto-reconnect turned off and MAC
randomization turned on and even my Wi-Fi access point broadcast is turned
off), my phone remembers the access point password just fine.

Given mine works fine without a "google profile", I don't think your
assumption is correct.

I think your approach of "just guessing" is dead wrong, in fact.
I think your approach should be the one an intelligent person would take.

Stop guessing.
Start troubleshooting.
> I do not want to register the thing on principles: it is absurd to login
> to google just to put a clock on the kitchen wall.

It's absurd the way you're just guessing that it's Google's fault.

Hell, I don't like Google any more than you do - but there's plenty of real
stuff to blame on Google rather than stuff that appears to have nothing
whatsoever to do with Google (as far as I can tell based on my experience).

Rest assured, I don't have a Google Account on my phone, and my phone
remembers the access point Wi-Fi password just fine (and my AP SSID isn't
even broadcasted, and my phone's MAC is randomized, which it has to
remember, and I have auto-reconnect turned off - all for privacy).

It still remembers the password even after all that, so Occam's Razor
implies that you should do some debugging before you blame something that
doesn't even seem to be needed (i.e., I'm not "registered" with Google.)

Carlos... I don't think you should keep guessing that it's all Google's
fault just because there's possibly something screwy in your Wi-Fi setup
that prevents your Wi-Fi password from being remembered.

Here's what I just did to test it out for you (on Android 11) given I don't
have a Google Account "registered" for my phone, and it remembers my WI-FI
password just fine. <https://i.postimg.cc/yWq5g17M/settings07.jpg>

1. I logged into my router to change the WI-FI access point name & passwd.
2. On Android, I turned my WI-FI off and then on & pressed "Add Network".
3. Enter Network Name === test_for_carlos_nomap
4. Security === WPA/WPA2-Personal
5. Password === foobar
6. Advanced = IP settings === DHCP
7. Advanced = Proxy === none
8. Advanced = Metered network === Detect automatically
9. Advanced = Hidden network === on
10. Advanced = MAC address type === Randomized MAC
[SAVE] <=== make sure you press this button!

I don't remember all your details on how you get it to forget the Wi-Fi
password, but I rebooted the phone, and, guess what? It remembered the
password. (Remember, I don't have any Google Account set up on my phone!)

Frank,
I don't see any evidence Carlos' problem has anything to do with Google.
That means the advice above might not be useful given that's likely not the
problem.

What Carlos needs to do, IMHO, is isolate the problem to the tasks run.

What I just did, since I'm a caring helpful person, is run the inspector
that is described in this recent thread about debugging Activities:
*Tutorial Opening Android intents & activities, syntax & beginner examples*
<https://groups.google.com/g/comp.mobile.android/c/dj1OYyp6FOI>

To help Carlos (since I'm a helpful person), I again followed the Wi-Fi
passphrase setup procedure described in my prior post in this thread.

The result was these are the two activities I think Carlos should explore.
com.android.settings/com.android.settings.Settings$WifiSettingsActivity
com.android.settings/com.android.settings.Settings$WifiAddNetworkActivity

Those are, at least in my phone, the Activities which are called when I
adjust and save my Wi-Fi passphrases, where it could be that on Carlos'
phone, there's a _different_ setting which is being called (I've seen this
happen a _lot_, particularly with privacy settings.

That's where I'd start, where Google search might give Carlos hints based on
the keywords above (or if his tablet calls a different set of activities).

I'd even wonder if, in Carlos' case, there's _no_ saving being done when he
pressess the button to "Save" his Wi-Fi settings? Carlos can tell by doing
what I did.

Carlos can even call the Activity manually following the tutorial I provided
in the aforementioned thread, and perhaps Carlos can _force_ the saving to
occur.

Dunno. But at least this advice is focused where the problem seems to be.

Bear in mind that you can easily spoof any Android (SDK) version and almost
any Android phone using the FOSS Aurora utility <https://auroraoss.com/>,

You get the _exact_ file that is on the Google Play repository.
Without Google Play.

I finally had to register this tablet, creating a google account for the
purpose. Complete with phone and birth date, there was not another way.
And had to do so on the computer, it was impossible on the tablet. It
syncs data to the account, it says. I have not yet tried to power it off
to see if the wifi password survives. [...] No, it doesn't.

I managed to update "google services", and then the play store worked
(but claims there are no updates at all). Then I installed "Gran reloj
digital" from "Riccardo Camattari", just the thing I wanted. No weather,
though. Can't get everything :-)

The clock, when WiFi is on, is accurate to the second :-)

An extremely high price for playing around with an old tablet.

What, registration? It is a dummy account, no data, no emails, empty. No
consequences.

The goal was obtaining an accurate wall clock for the kitchen, and I
have that, cheap :-)

A new tablet would be more expensive and a waste of good hardware.

Nobody seems to sell ready made kitchen wall clocks that sync using
WiFi. Bedside table clocks, yes, there are some.

I have a wall clock that syncs via the U.S. National Bureau of
Standards. Usually called "atomic clocks,"
<https://www.amazon.com/atomic-wall-clock/s?k=atomic+wall+clock>. Does
your country have something similar?

I have a ceiling clock (projects to the ceiling in the bedroom) that

I pressed send too soon. I also wanted to mention that I don't want a
kitchen wall clock because there are already three clocks in the
kitchen: stove, microwave oven, coffeepot.

And because of the cabinets, there's no wall space in the kitchen.

In Europe we have clocks and watches, with digital or analog displays,
that sync on the time broadcast station in Mainflingen, Germany. They
are commonly called "radio clocks" or "DCF77 clocks", the latter after
the station's 77.5 kHz carrier frequency. Its reach is about 1500 km,
so it covers almost all of Europe. The station itself derives the
time from a couple of atomic clocks.
Depending on the clock or watch, it may sync itself to DCF77 every hour
to once every 24 hours, the latter usually at 04:00, so after the shift
from DST to standard time v.v. has taken place.
