Those "killfiles" of yours aren't really working all that well, are

Perhaps you should try Andy Burnelli's versions. He's very much into
privacy and - AFAIK - very much dislikes adds,

I don't use NetGuard, because my previous phone had this kind of
functionality built-in and on my current phone I do not (yet?) need it.

It's not to limit mobile data, but to switch off (or on) mobile data
*access* on a per app basis. So you turn off mobile data access for your
video player, your internet radio app and any other app which should not
use mobile data. If you change your mind, you can change the settings
again.

So maybe it's easier to do it with this app, but this can also be done
from the system itself.

It can only be done from the system itself, if the system has this
functionality, which not all phones have.

Note that NetGuard can deny (or allow) access to Wi-Fi or/and mobile
data on a *per app* basis:

"Applications and addresses can individually be allowed or denied access
to your Wi-Fi and/or mobile connection."

Most phones can only deny (or allow) access to Wi-Fi or/and mobile for
*all apps at once*.

Does your phone have this *per app* functionality? (As I mentioned, my
previous phone (Huawei Y5[60-L02]) had this functionality.)

Ah, Thunderbird on a pretend computer! :-) I use Thunderbird for
email. For NetNews/Usenet, I use a *real* client. :-)

And by the way, you missed the "Hamster" bit! Hamster has about the
most powerful filtering available. IIRC, Dialog's filtering is based on
Hamster's.

Anyway, happy killfiling and happy reading. Have a nice day.

Thunderbird's my favorite newsreader. It's much easier to use than my
Android newsreaders PhoNews and Groundhog. Still looking for a better
Android newsreader if anyone has any suggestions...

BTW earlier I was using the Android app CrossOver beta, a Windows
emulator, to run Thunderbird on my Chromebooks. Had a few glitches but
for the most part it worked very well. Unfortunately the Play Store
removed CrossOver so I'm now stuck with PhoNews on my new CB toys.

I assume you're not in for one of the CUI (Character/Console UI)
newsreaders (like slrn, tin, etc.), are you? (See my 'User-Agent:'
header.)

If you are in for those you could try Termux - a Linux-like
environment for Android - and try to get/build one of those CUI
newsreaders.

'Termux'
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.termux>

AFAIK, there's no GUI environment in/for Termux.

I'm not aware of any Linux-like GUI environment for Android, but maybe
there is.

I've never looked into a newsreader for/on Android, because I only use
Usenet/NetNews on my laptop, mostly only at home, not on holiday/
vacation or other trips.

That appears beyond my geeky capabilities I'm afraid. But thanks for the
suggestion.

I'm told that Linux is easily available on my Chromebooks but have yet
to try it.

I use this Thunderbird app for posting most of the time, I suppose
because I always have and am used to it. One thing I like is
the spell checker so that I don't embarrass myself quite so often. Also
the keyboard is nice vs punching it out an Android tablet screen.
I still do occasionally post using my phone (PhoNews since Groundhog
broke with Android 10) when out and killing time waiting for you know who...

Tin? Insecure old crap born roughly 30years ago. Offered on a website
without https with download from a ftp-server. Both perhaps acceptable
in the last century.

I really liked tin. I zipped through it, selecting what I wanted to
read, and then read it. When I switched to Netscape I missed tin's
features... until I forgot about them. Still, liking it isn't shameful.

Very hard. Believe me. Programming of a today's OS ist quite different.
Once you have the OS you can't use the machine for anything else than to

I'm joking, of course. I did a little FORTRAN programming for some
accounting crap, and quite a bit of dBaseII stuff, but I really hate
programming. I just can't think in the required detail. Hubby and son
love it, though.

I did some Basic, Cobol and Fortran programming back in the late 70s on
large scale/mainframe computers at a Polytechnical Institute in
Switzerland. To be honest: Forgotten almost everything ...

Hubby learned to program when his company sent him to DC to figure out
why some software wasn't working. At the time he knew NOTHING about
programming. After looking at the printouts he had a Eureka moment: "I
see the problem -- some idiot keeps writing j=j+1 !"

He learned to program reading those FORTRAN printouts and ultimately
discovered the problem. Ultimately he was described as 'speaking
FORTRAN like a native'.

Son learned BASIC at 11, fixing the programs in the '101 BASIC Games'
book. He skipped FORTRAN and went on to C...

I envy them.

Fact is...
*Frank knows more about Usenet than Joerg & probably more than most of us.

And I'm no fan of Frank's unprepossessing personality.
I simply tell it as it is.

On the other hand, Joerg is a moron of the piece of shit worthless kind.
To be in Joerg's killfile is the best thing that could happen to Usenet.

Back on topic, only Frank, Andy Burns, and I tried to help the OP.
It's up to the OP to take advantage of that friendly help, or not.

I appreciate that the OP and Frank, in particular, brought up the Android
11+ storage-option hurdles that none of the rest of us (AFAICT) had any
clue about, which I appreciate.

I've learned a _lot_ from this thread (as I do from almost every thread
where the iKooks and the morons don't destroy anyway).

Given what we know now, I give it _zero_ chance Google will be receptive to
a "suggestion" since in fact, AFAICT, nothing is wrong.

What "seems" to have happened is simply Google changed the way things are
done, where, before, there were certain APIs to store app data on the
external sdcard, and now there are _different_ APIs to do that task.

The difference being _only_ the app can access that store external data.
Which sounds like a good idea to me (borrowed from Apple most likely).

Hence, here are my assessments of the known facts (AFAICT):
a. Google changed the APIs for good reasons in Android 11+
b. Any app is welcome to change their APIs at any time thereafter
c. I tested the OP's suggested app, OsmAnd~ which seemed to work just fine

Hence as far as I can tell, if there is an app extent that does not store
its data on the external sdcard, it's not Google but the app developers
that folks would need to complain to.

Am I wrong?
