it will remote-erase the moment it reconnects.

Dunno that I'd call it ridiculous. I find Google's version "Find My
Device" may come in handy someday. It will ring for 5 minutes, write to
the lock screen, and erase all content. Nice to know it's there if ever
needed.

If I want to locate the wife (through her iPhone) when she's out
Apple does ask for a password. But since I let Google remember our Apple
passwords it's just as quick click and I'm in. No big deal...

A far better idea for me and you but obviously not everybody.
Translation YMMV...

finding another device is trivial. certainly *someone* has another
phone, tablet or computer.

> and hope that you remember your AppleID and password.

an apple id/password is not always required to activate lost mode and
forgetting that will be a much bigger problem.

> It's a far better idea to just have some contact information on the lock

it is not 'far better'. it's a different solution, with advantages and
disadvantages (mostly the latter).

> Put an e-mail address there, or a Google Voice phone number, and

other way around. apple had lost mode long before google did, and in
the interim, google added the lockscreen solution.

what you fail to understand is that there isn't actually much of a
demand for it, yet you grasp at it for your narrative.

actually, it isn't, and doing it on an iphone is a lot easier than your
convoluted method (no surprise there).
