Right click on desktop blank spot and select display settings should
show all monitors by number. Click on identify and assigned number will
show on each monitor.

Use number(s) for multi_monitor_tool to turn on/off/reposition.

You have a cable problem. Turn monitors off one at a time and any that
change position when turned on have a bad cable. Prove by swapping cable
with one that does not change position.

Write a batch to be triggered by Task Scheduler using "On Idle". To turn
off only need multi_monitor_tool using /TurnOff 1 2 3 4 5 leaving off
the number to stay on.

You could take a screenshot of the Display control panel,
to show the devices are still present. Another way to
take a "proof" shot, is to use SnippingTool and do a
screenshot of the whole screen, and the dimensions
of that picture reflect the size of the display surface.

Sometimes the easiest solution is not super simple... but it is why I
appreciate scripting made to be easier.

Clearly it isn't or you would have done it to show that you could on your Mac.

Not sure I could do that on a Mac, but I have shown other examples where
scripting has come in handy. Have not really looked on the Mac because it was
not relevant to the situation. Looking now I see there is an app for the Mac
to do this:

https://macdownload.informer.com/disablemonitor/

I would have to tinker to script it. There are also some curious warnings
about it possibly damaging some hardware... so maybe a good one to avoid. Did
a bit more searching:

https://www.madrau.com

It is NOT free, but says it can "Disable or activate screens on demand". That
can be set based on different criteria.

OK, did a bit more checking. This one IS free:

https://prevent-mac-from-sleeping.3bitlab.com/prevent_mac_sleep_help.html

It allows for putting a display to sleep and it has AppleScript support. Not
sure if you can do it on a per-screen basis though.
