HP says to use Windows', but it doesn't offer me one. HP Smart app can't
find my printer. :( Ethernet cable connection works though, but I prefer
USB cable.

Thank you for reading for reading and hopefully answering soon. :)

It may help to no the model number of your HP printer. Is it an All in
One? The driver for some other printer may work with yours but the
model number would have to be known

When Windows can not find your driver is offers you the ability of using
Windows Update to go and download ALL the printer drivers that Microsoft
is still keeping functional drivers for.

Windows 10 as it is normally installed only has a very few recent
drivers available for use. The bulk of the drivers are only downloaded
when YOU request them (not that they advertise that fact), and it can
take quite a while to download them, like 5 to 15 minutes or more
depending on your internet speed.

Yesterday I had to install the drivers for an old HP-4100 laser printer.
Like you, Windows did not automatically find drivers for it. When I
told Windows to use the Windows Update service to locate the driver it
did turn up and worked just fine. I believe after the driver archive
downloaded it had 2 listing for Hewlett Packard and one listing for HP.
Anyway give it another try and when it fails tell it to use the
Windows Update feature to look for your printer.

Your computer does not maintain the large drivers download. You have to
do the Windows Update feature every time you install an old printer. I
seem to remember it even included a driver for an old Epson MX or FX-80
printer.

I failed to notice you had your printer working Ethernet, not that it
was the port you wanted to use.

I have had some success in the past going to the HP web site and
downloading 64-bit drivers for W7 or better Windows 8 and using them on
Windows 10 machines. In the old days I seem to remember you had to
install the drivers (before) you plugged the printer into the USB port
or they seemed to not get discovered half the time. Good Luck.

Have you gone to HP's web site to lookup what drivers and bitwidths are
available from them? After you mentioned the model, I was able to
search to find:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-photosmart-8400-printer-series/402149/model/402151

In addition, does "can't find my printer" mean when you plug in the
printer using a USB cable that the device does not show up in the
Printers list or under Device Management (devmgmt.msc)?

You should try it using the Ethernet cable. Printing off the
config page should give the IP address (it probably doesn't
support SSDP or uPNP or some similar protocol to a 2021 standard).

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-other_settings-winpc/hp-photosmart-8450-and-windows-10/0c9dd09b-fe4b-4ff5-b765-a75246397233

But you should be able to get it working. At least, according
to one person there.

It's highly unlikely that HP, or any other printer manufacturer. has
Windows 10 drivers for a 17-year-old printer.

So, they're forcing us to dump our old working reliable printers and buy
newer printers. :(

Damn Windows Updates! It installed an updated HP USB driver (v7b25) from
8/13/2012. I had to figure out how to uninstall it (Device Manager) and
to roll back to an older version from 2006. Now, it works again.
https://imgur.com/a/S8bemAb for my screen (shot/capture)s. Argh. I need
to how to block this even though Windows Updates is not showing this
update again (for now?). Bah!

The correct interpretation is THEY are not going to bother to expend
their resources to continue supporting legacy products that were long
ago discontinued. They didn't force you to migrate to a later version
of Windows. That was your choice. Whether it be software or hardware,
many companies stay on old (and unsupported) versions of Windows to
retain use of critical albeit old hardware or software.

Of course, in another reply, you noted you fixed the problem. I gave a
URL to a driver that should work under Windows 10 x64. So, they must
have enough corporate customers to qualify expending resources to
maintain a driver for that ancient hardware.

Disable hardware updates in the WU client. Leaving that enabled is
asking for trouble. If and when you choose to get hardware updates,
they should come from the hardware maker, not from Microsoft.

https://www.google.com/search?q=windows%2010%20disable%20hardware%20updates

Users still have control over that type of update.

I don't find the option to disable ANY updates option. I only can delay their
updates. I miss the old Windows versions (e.g., 7) with more GUI controls. MS
really wants to control everything by itself. :(

We really shouldn't have to do both the Google search with valid
criteria *AND* focus on a particular hit to show you how to do it. You
should've already looked at some of the search hits before replying you
are unable to find the setting. The setting is there.

Start : run : sysdm.cpl

is the shortcut path to get to that picture in the PNG
(the System Control Panel)

This will save you the more circuitous official path to get there.
(Older versions of Windows 10 get you there more directly,
like 10240 it's almost logical.)

Not with the Home edition.

There are plenty of online articles professing to kill the OS updates,
but eventually they fail. Since they are posted online, Microsoft can
read those, too, and they make changes, like adding updating into other
services that don't sound like anything like updating. Used to be able
to disable the WUserv service to kill Windows updates. Then Microsoft
added updating into other services. They also started adding events in
Task Scheduler for updating. A suggestion you find online might work,
might not, and may only work until Microsoft catches up.

I can't remember which feature it was, but I found when getting
aggressive with update killing that some feature no longer worked
despite it had nothing to do with networking. Took a long time to
figure out what to reenable to get the feature working. Microsoft
punished me for killing updates. Probably was caused by killing a
service that did more than just updates. By combining functions in a
service, killing it for one function means losing the others.

Some articles mention using the group policy editor. You don't get that
in the Home edition. All policies are registry entries, so if you know
the registry entry to create or modify then you can effect the policies.
However, some policies get a hash key that prevents anyone, including
malware, from adding some policies. For example, SRPs (Software
Restriction Policies) that let you block or allow some programs from
loading or not get hashes when you use the security editor to define
them. You cannot create the hash, so you editing the registry to define
an SRP won't work (it will be ignored). However, many policies don't
have hashes. You can edit the registry to add/delete/change them using
regedit.exe. Microsoft used to publish a spreadsheet of policies, where
they are in the registry, and what settings they use. I haven't checked
in a long time to see if the spreadsheet is still available, and if kept
up to date.

To kill updates can require disabling one, or more, services, registry
edits, and Task Scheduler event editing. I'm sure it can be effectively
executed, but when Microsoft started shifting some updates into other
services along with defining new or more events in Task Scheduler, I
gave up fighting Microsoft. Yeah, it's their software, but they treat
your hardware as their property, too, and feel they can change its state
whenever they want.

When Win10 first appeared, I used Winaero Tweaker to disable automatic
updates, automatic reboots, and all related nags and notifications. Other
methods may have failed along the way, I wouldn't know since I don't use
them, but Winaero Tweaker has continued to work just fine.

I also have Winaero Tweaker, and also tried their Update Disable option.
Mostly works, but I found Microsoft was still sneaking in some updates
via another service. So, I started disabling the other service. Then
Microsoft added updating into another service and via Task Scheduler
events (which call the other services). I remember disabling those
events, but eventually some functionality got disabled that I still
wanted. The WinAero tweak mostly works, but not completely. I'd still
see messages on shutdown or next startup about finishing an update. I'm
sure updates could be fully disabled, but also remember that most tweaks
are not documented, so the user won't know what to undo when a problem
later arises.

If you click on the Help link when you select WinAero's update disable
option to read up on what it does, all it does is disable the Windows
Update service. That is not sufficient. It makes no mention of the
Microsoft Update Health Service, Windows Update Medic Service (used to
undo disabling the WUserv service), or any of the Task Scheduler events
(disabling a service just prevents it from automatic loading on Windows
startup, *not* from another process calling the service's functions in
their DLLs which instead would require defining SRPs which can only be
done using the group policy or local security editors that create the
required registry hash, but which Home users won't have).

WinAero's tweak to disable Windows updates is the same one I had been
using for many years back into Windows 7. I also disabled the BITS
service which is how WU retrieved the updates; however, BITS is not
exclusive to just WU, and other processes can use it for backgrounded
low-bandwidth file retrieval, like some AVs. So, I stopped disabling
BITS, and just disabled WUserv, but that is an incomplete solution on
Windows 10.
