Windows has some nice landscape wallpapers but I don't know how to find
out where they were shot. Is there a way to find out?

I've gone to google images and there is a little camera icon in the search box. Click it, and it will allow you to upload a photo and it
will then search for similar images on the web. It won't tell you where it is, but maybe one of the finds will tell you.

I know what you are talking about, but first, there is no Google in my
windows, second, I am talking about THE wallpaper, not just any picture.
It means I have a bunch of icons covering that wallpaper, so I could not
even make a clear screen shot of the wallpaper.

If you want to see your desktop wallpaer, right click a bare spot on the
desktop then choose view and uncheck 'Show desktop icons' to get them
back just reverse the process.

Look at C:\Windows\Web

And by google, I mean the web site https://images.google.com/ Not the browser.
Click the icon and point to that wallpaper (if you found it).

There is no browser called Google, just as there is no browser called
Microsoft, Mozilla, or Apple. Browsers have their own names, not the
name of the company that makes them.

You're probably thinking of Chrome.

You can have any picture you like for your wall paper.
If you would like pictures on a specific subject search on the subject,
ie landscape pictures, dog pictures, etc.
If you find a picture you like, drag/copy by right clicking on the image
and select Copy Image. Then paste it to a convenient folder.
Next go to Settings, Personalize, Background.
Find the Browse button and click. Navigate to the folder where you
saved your image, double click on its file name and it becomes your wall
paper.
I do this all of the time and always know where the picture was taken as
I use my photos.
If you would like pictures on a specific subject search on the subject,
ie landscape pictures, dog pictures, etc.

Under which stone are you living? You don't have any decent browser
under your Windows? And with "decent" I definitely don't mean privacy-
violating crap like Chrome or Edge.

> second, I am talking about THE wallpaper, not just any picture.

There is no "THE wallpaper" in Windows - there are several of them,
located under C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper and C:\Windows\Web\Screen

You don't have too: see above.

Surely THE wallpaper, for a given user, is what is pointed to by

HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\Wallpaper

it can be in any folder.

Not sure what you mean by "there is no Google in my windows"; if you
mean you don't have a desktop shortcut to Google, nor do I - it's always
accessed via a browser. I have
https://www.google.co.uk/advanced_search?hl=en behind the "home" button
in my browsers, though, and https://images.google.com/ - which I assume
is what Big Al meant - among my bookmarks. Once you've found your image,
click on the camera image as Al described.

Might also be worth seeing if there's any information embedded in the
image, once you've found it (see below) - in IrfanView, type I (for
info) then C, I, or E (try all three) when viewing an image; I'm sure
the information (general Comment, IPTC info, or EXIF info) is also
accessible via other utilities, I'm just used to IrfanView. Though IME
images from Microsoft tend _not_ to have embedded information, so Big
Al's suggestion of finding (other occurrences of) them, and finding
information on the page containing them, might be more productive.

>>picture. It means I have a bunch of icons covering that wallpaper, so
>>I could not even make a clear screen shot of the wallpaper.

Andy Burns has told you where/how to find what file is your current
wallpaper, which is almost certainly better than trying to grab a
screenshot, but I'm sure there is a way to make the icons disappear -
certainly third-party utils can, so I presume it's just a Windows
function that they call. (Though equally I'd not be surprised if access
to that function has been obscured in later Windows; as Windows versions
progress, they hide more and more from users so the users don't worry
their pretty little heads. I first came across that at the change from
'95 to '98, when suddenly the window that allowed change of various
visual aspects - like window colours or the font in title bars -
disappeared behind an "advanced" button.)

I know, but a lot of people use the shorthand Google for Chrome. Like in

I'm glad to hear that you know, but I caution you against misusing a
word simply because a lot of people do it. Just because they are wrong
doesn't mean you should be too. If you misuse a word like that, you are
likely to be misunderstood.

> Like in
> "I googled it up."

But that's very different. The verb "to google" doesn't refer to the
browser "Chrome." It refers to the search engine "Google," which can be
used in *any* browser. Since it's by far the most popular search engine,
what the verb "google" means is very clear to almost everyone. I don't
object to using the verb "to google" for doing a web search; not only
would almost everyone understand it, but I would too, and I even
sometimes use it myself.

Using the verb "to google" for doing a web search is almost like using
the verb "to xerox" for making a copy. Xerox doesn't dominate the world
of copy machines the way it used to, but the term is still so widely
used that it would be almost always understand.

Chrome is apparently the most popular browser these days (even though I
personally think it's a very poor choice, almost as bad as Edge; I think
FireFox is much better), but it's not so popular that it dominates the
world of browsers the way Google dominates the world of search engines.

That sounds too pedantic to me, even if true.

Don't you use a Hoover over there? That would be the top generic name here ...

Exactly! Those brandnames are largely country/region specific. Of the
above mentioned brandnames, only Kleenex would be *recognized*, not
*used* (as a generic name referring to tissues) in our country (NL) (and
probably the same for most/all of Europe).

Yes, thanks. I knew there was another common example I wanted to
mention, but I couldn't think of it.

Frigidaire used to be another example, but it's rarely used for
"refrigerator" these days. Victrola is another one no longer common.

Yes, thanks--two other common words I could have mentioned.

Some of those are so common I hadn't realized they were brand names.

Another one I forgot about. But that's a UK (and perhaps other
English-speaking coountries) term, and is never (almost never?) used in
the US.
