Do you have a network on/off switch that can be double clicked to turn the
network off and then double clicked to turn the network back on?

Hi Peter,

Ah Ha! You are doing your taxes!

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/enabledisable-network-interface-via-command-line/17a21634-c5dd-4038-bc0a-d739209f5081?auth=1

netsh interface set interface name="Local Area Connection" admin=disabled

Subsitute the actual network connection name if it isn't Local Area
Connection.

Make up a shortcut icon on your desktop. One
for disabled and one for enabled

As far as I know, there is a standard feature in Windows 10.

Click on the network icon in the system tray, and several tiles pop
up. One of them is "Airplane Mode". Click on that, and all networking
is turned off. The network icon in the system tray changes to an
airplane.

Click the airplane, and the tiles pop up again. Click the "Airplane
Mode" tile, and airplane mode turns off. Network connections are re-
established in a few seconds.

My PC networks through Wifi. I don't know what if anything Airplane
Mode would do with a wired Ethernet connection.

It doesn't disable wired networking.

I always wondered what Airplane Mode did, but never
bothered to look it up. You learn something new...

In the past I've looked for the same. I've not been able to find a store
which sold a customer grade version of it.

An option could be to (try to) use a simple powered hub, and put a switch in
the power-adaptor lines.

Just tried and it does not disable Ethernet.

Most of my kit uses wired.
In this room I have a smart TV, a PS4, an AV receiver, a Satellite STB,
a satellite PVR, a terrestrial PVR and a Blu-Ray player which all need
an internet connection for full functionality and are connected through
an 8 port switch.

I have thought (briefly) about letting them all use WiFi to see if the
devices could sort out the channels amongst themselves and establish a
reliable connection but I can't be bothered having seen how the lag
introduced by WiFi affects multiplayer in Gran Turismo on the
Playstation.

How about a (layer 2 MAC bridge) hub with a power switch?

As far as I know, all Windows versions have a Disable
option in Netwrk Connection. Personally I don't
like to trust that. I have a UPS on my desk with sockets
for in/out ethernet. I just reach over and unplug it if
I'm not going to be online for awhile. Though I've noticed
that not all UPSs have that. A similar option would be
to but a connector or a cheap network splitter to put
in reach of the computer.

A small network cable enough to get it into hands reach, then put an inline connector (female/female) and connect the cable to the router.
Reach over and disconnect (manual).

Over the years, people have posted various batch files that
enable/disable the relevant network adapter, or if local networking is
supposed to stay up the batch file will just remove the default gateway
and then reinstate it later. That's not good enough for classified
government systems but out here in consumerland it should mostly be
fine.

Hubs are hard to find but a cheap switch would work the same. Get one
with a power switch so you don't have to yank the power cable or use an
outlet strip.

Airplane mode should disable all radios (including Bluetooth, which many

I tried that netsh command in a command window but it still requires admin.

netsh interface set interface name="eth0" admin=disabled
The requested operation requires elevation (Run as administrator).

When I copied it to a shortcut target, it flashed once but did nothing.

I don't want to disable the local network with the software switch.
I want to turn on and off only the wide area network to the internet.

This disables the ethernet connection in an administrator command window.
netsh.exe interface set interface name="eth0" admin=disabled

But this didn't turn the ethernet connection back on in that same window.
netsh.exe interface set interface name="eth0" admin=enabled

I had to reboot to get the network working again to run the syntax search.

These commands work in an admin command window but not in a shortcut.
netsh interface set interface "eth0" ENABLED
netsh interface set interface "eth0" DISABLED

The problem is that software command shuts off the LAN and the WAN.
I only want to shut off the WAN with the software switch. Not the LAN.

Manually disabling the network icon takes too many steps.
And there is no wifi on this desktop computer. Only ethernet.

Just to yank the ethernet wire requires moving things around.
And that disables the LAN in addition to disabling the WAN.

I only want to disable the WAN with a software on/off switch.

Doubleclick once and the WAN is disabled.
Doubleclick again and the WAN is back in business.
The LAN can stay in business the whole time.

It's useful when weird things happen or when installing software.
Or just to disable the WAN when walking away from the computer.

I had searched before asking and found this software but it does nothing.
InternetOff 3.0 - http://crystalrich.com/internetoff/

Does it work for you to turn your WAN off (but not the wired LAN)?

That would disable the LAN and WAN where I just want to disable the WAN.
What is needed is a way to disable only the LAN using a software toggle.

That will disable both the LAN and the WAN.
I am looking for a software switch to toggle the WAN on/off but not the LAN.

I'm sure it can be done but I only found examples that drop the entire wired
network using Windows commands in an administrator command window.

I think I saw an idea to change only the DHCP properties that I can explore.
