IF you really love things that go boom, I recommend the "Monster Hunter International" series, starting with the book of that name. Full of loving descriptions of guns, which I suspect are also pretty accurate, though I am no expert. Otherwise reasonably entertaining, but nothing special. The spin off Monster Hunter Memoirs: Grunge series is very amusing, and I recommend it. I've just had a look at the free sample on Baen of the new Monster Hunter Memoirs: Fever. It is not by the same collaboration as Grunge and it doesn't have the same feel, but the sample grew on me as I read through it, and I will probably buy it when it comes out fully. I like the line "personally I see having issues with authority a trait that all patriotic Americans should share"

I am very tempted to add Monster Hunter International to my Top Ten
list. Great series, not a bad book in the bunch.

I mostly agree. I've enjoyed all of them, except for the one co-written
with Sarah Hoyt (#7 I think? Monster Hunters International: Guardian.)
I strongly recommend flat-out skipping that one.[1]

But the rest are very enjoyable,
Tony
[1] Just a minute...Yeah, here's what I said in this group back in early May 2021:
Monster Hunters International: Guardian - Correia & Hoyt [MHI #7 - the most recent one in the main series] I’m not sure why I’ve enjoyed this series (but I have!). I don’t even remember why I read the first one (but I did!). Anyhow, the first 6 are fun and slight and are good for easy reading that requires very little thinking - they're basically about a clandestine/non-public organization devoted to killing monsters, with some longer term arcs weaved in; the general public does not know monsters exist; enjoyable characters, enjoyable dialogue, enjoyable moments, etc. And every single one of those things was missing here in #7; lazy plotting (e.g. maybe 90-95% of the book is about a new mom trying to rescue her kidnapped kid), predictable and cliched; most of the main characters were off-screen in this one, and the one main character (the protagonist here) was nothing like herself, etc etc etc. If this was the first MHI book I ever read, it would be the last. I’ll certainly investigate #8 pretty deeply before I decide to read it or not.[2]

[2] I did read #8, and it was a good return to form, very much like #1-#6.

I enjoyed #7 and gave it 4 stars. Here is my review:
"Book number seven of an eight book dark fantasy series. There are many
other prequels and sequels in the Monster Hunter Universe. I read the
well printed and well bound MMPB published by Baen in 2020. I will
probably purchase and read just about any future books in the series.
If you like dark fantasy then I would advise checking out this series.
The first book is a riot.
Julie Shackleford is a fifth generation monster hunter. Her husband is
Owen Pitt who is on a international mission to close an
inter-dimensional rift on a Russian island, along with the rest of the
active monster hunters of MHI. Julie stayed home to deliver and take of
their baby who is doing well after being delivered by one of the local
Orc midwives. And she takes care of her retired grandfather and manages
the MHI business. But then a monster shows up by the name of Brother
Death and kidnaps her baby, wanting to trade her baby for a powered
artifact that Julie is guarding for the Old Ones. And then Julie's
mother, a master vampire, shows up and wants to trade Brother Death for
her grandson so she can raise him properly."

You have 27, or 28 in your "top ten" list. OK.

I think a list like this should include:
"Starship Troopers" by Robert Heinlein.
"Rendezvous with Rama" by Arthur C. Clarke
"The Fountains of Paradise" by Arthur C. Clarke
"The Songs of Distant Earth" by Arthur C. Clarke
"2001 a Space Odyssey" (and 2010 and 2061) by Arthur C. Clarke
"Childhoods End" by Arthur C. Clarke
Robert Silverberg deserves inclusion from his number of books,
longevity, and variety of ideas, I'll suggest "Nightwings",
"Hawksbill Station" and "Tower of Glass".
"Seed of Light" by Edmund Cooper

Nice description!

It's really neat that you enjoyed it. I surely wish I had. Gratefully, #8 was
a return to everything I liked about #1-#6.

Yup, those are all five star books. Just not six stars for me. Six
stars means that I have read it three times or more. And of course the
xkcd rating rule applies.

When the basic idea of the book is "almost all technnology stops working" don't expect it to fit with real world science.

That's a matter of personal taste, I'm not a big guns fan but Ringo does do a good job of starting series that involve a lot of violence and making them reasonable.
Completing the series is another matter, he's dropped a fair few I was interested in and his "of course the SS were elite soldiers and will save Europe" in Wath on the Rhine, a book he cowrote with Kratman, and "only christianity and religious people are worthwhile" in The Tuloriad and Queen of Wands (which as I recall from 1 read back when it was has a main character who's incredibly competent but because she's female she has to obey her husband in all things and he's a clueless arsehole) makes me less likely to read future releases

Also dubious about anybody who chooses to write about 2 main characters who are attracted to the idea of raping people but hold themselves back...

Oh, until you mentioned a method, I hadn't noticed the modifier was SIX stars. Now it's too late to make a joke about "Six stars in the increasingly inaccurately named five star ratings!"

Apropos the lower ranges. Since this summer, I've been browsing through a number of movies where the available cast list and summary still left me wondering whether I had seen it before. So I've started a list with a sentence or two to remind me what _I_ saw in it, and a rating: 0-no reason to watch it again. 1-something in it worth rewatching. 2-more than one thing to rewatch it for. I'm guessing a 3, 4, or 5 would make it memorable enough that I don't have to put it on the list.

Didn't Arthur C. Clarke say something about technology ? Oh yeah, "In
1962, in his book “Profiles of the Future: An Inquiry into the Limits of
the Possible”, science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated his
famous Three Laws, of which the third law is the best-known and most
widely cited: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable
from magic”."

Lately I've been citing a corollary: Sufficiently advanced
incompetence is indistinguishable from malice.
