I tired that at Lassen National Park. Turns out it was just warm
mud bubbling with trapped steam and the steak just sunk. I cried.
I really wanted that steak!

When I had a summer job in an alloy plant back in the early 70s we
heated up a lot of food on the "heats". The smelted metal was poured
into cast iron pans about 6 ft across and 2ft deep. The slag would ride
to the top and they sat there to cool for about 6 hours before they were
removed. You could not put aluminum foil on the freshly poured stuff
because it would melt. A kettle of water would come to a boil very
quickly. You had to be careful to keep things wrapped because there was
so much dust in the air.

My friend from Connecticut visited Hawaii in 2009 and he hiked up to the
summit of Mauna Loa. Sent pictures too.

Hiking only on that one - no roads.
"It's a tough climb, partly because of the high altitude -almost 14,000
feet. But we got to the summit, and slept in the cabin at the summit.
And yes, there is a big crater there at the top. It's been dormant
since the last eruption which was in 1984."

Mauna Loa erupted on 11/28. For some Hawaiians, it was a good sign because November 28 is the anniversary date when, in 1843, the Kingdom of Hawaii was formally recognized by Britain and France.

Not Centralia. It was Wilkes Barre township. The somewhat famous Giants Despair hill climb is still held there. The road had mine fires smoking on both sides with the race going on. My first home was just before the start line.

Giants Despair Hillclimb is held just outside of Wilkes-Barre, PA, in Laurel Run Borough on East Northampton St. This community has been host to this event since it was first held in 1906. It is one of the oldest continuing motor racing events in the world. The Giant is rich in tradition. In its early years, all of the world’s major manufacturers sent their top cars and drivers to capture honors at the event. Early notables included Ralph DePalma (Fiat Team) and Louis Chevrolet driving for Buick. Rejuvenated in 1951, the list of Who’s Who in the driving world included Carroll Shelby (first driver to brake the magic minute), Roger Penske, Oscar Koveleski, etc. The hill starts out with a long gently rising straight about one quarter mile in length that leads into a fast left hander that tests both nerves and skill. Then on to a short chute and “Devils Elbow,” a sharply rising hairpin that goes off camber at its crest. Next is a series of ninety-degree turns connected by short straights. Then comes “The Incline,” a meandering quarter mile stretch that rises at twenty- two degrees to the finish. Last June when I was in New Jersey we climbed to the highest point in
Cape May. I'm rather proud of that. No special equipment either.

It's an active volcano, so who knows? It stinks around there, just like
Yellowstone. I haven't smelled either of the sulfurous delights since
the late Sixties when other tourists were far rarer, and I didn't

Highest elevation/mountain in Virginia Beach is Mt.Trashmore. 60 feet
above sea level (my elevation is 20 feet or less). I've been there many
times but not recently. It's a worthless mountain, imo.
