I've baked this many times.

The recipe (from a cooking magazine) didn't say if using a steel bowl instead of Tupperware would make a big difference or not, but you do need to make sure the bowl is the right size, either way. (So you may not have a choice.)

3 packages dry yeast (3 Tbs, I assume)
3 3/4 cups warm water (105 F to 115 F)
10 cups all-purpose flour
6 Tbs. sugar
6 Tbs margarine, melted
1 1/2 Tb. salt
2 eggs

"Dissolve yeast in warm water in a 7-quart Tupperware container; let stand 5 minutes.

"Add flour and next 4 ingredients, stirring until well-blended. Cover container with Tupperware lid, and seal. Let stand at room temperature 1 hour or until lid 'pops' off.

"Spoon the dough evenly into into 3 (9" x 5") loaf pans coated with cooking spray. Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place (85 F), free from drafts, 30 minutes or until doubled in size. Bake at 375 F for 45 minutes (time may vary)."

I used soy flour and water instead of eggs. (A Tb. of soy flour costs just under 10 cents.)

I don't bother with sealing the lid, since it tends to pop off long before it has risen enough. (You can use a towel instead, if you like.)

And I calculated the final cost, but since I'm using 2020 prices for the other ingredients -

https://groups.google.com/g/rec.food.cooking/c/Wt5KTiv4WJE/m/o_CbtDG1BQAJ

- and since I don't remember the cost of bulk yeast (I bought a 1-pound container years ago, which I keep in the freezer), the figure I got likely needs 20 cents added or so. (I DID count the cost for using 3 cups of wholewheat flour plus 7 cups of white flour.)

And so, the cost for three home-baked loaves is...

$2.27, or just under 76 cents per loaf.

At any rate, despite inflation, I'm pretty sure the real cost is less than a dollar per loaf.

Odd, I don't think I've ever added egg to homemade white bread or pizza
dough. What is the purpose of that?

Hmm, that's not bad.

Perhaps it makes something like brioche. Or perhaps it's just a weird
recipe.

Yes, it is. It's garbage. No matter how cheap,

Lenona's "food" posts here remind me a bit of The Simpson's "Marge vs. the Monorail"

I suspected as much, but I would have expected a little milk.

I prefer to knead dough when I make it. Presumably, you're upset about
the Oleo they called for. I'd simply use butter and wouldn't think
twice about it. Store butter is cheap, and withholding the unnecessary
eggs would bring the price per loaf down further.

What price butter do you mean? I'm curious. (I can't remember the last time Market Basket had a sale on it.)

Turns out the yeast package was just over 1/2 pound. However, the cost PER pound was $4.69.

Since a cup of yeast weighs 0.3 lb., that means a tablespoonful of yeast costs just over 8.5 cents.

I will likely revise that cost of baked goods list in 2025 - unless more than one person here begs for an earlier update.

If I find butter under $4/pound, I buy several pounds of it. I
currently have at least 8 packs of 4 sticks in the cellar freezer. Of
course, that doesn't come close to rivaling Joan's butter hoard. ;)

Shop at BJs. You do have to buy 4 pounds but regular price is $3.50.

ALWAYS check the butter prices around major holidays such as Thanksgiving,
Christmas, and Easter. Generally, stores will have sales on butter at these times
of the year and it's a great time to stock up if you have a freezer to store it.

Currently Walmart in my area has the two one-pound packages, eight sticks,
for $7.56 per package, or you can opt for the one-pound package, four sticks,
$3.98. Kroger has the two one-pound packages, eight sticks, for $6.99 per
package, which is the better price, but, the one-pound package, four sticks is
going for $4.29.

Aldi will also have their butter on sale, or always had, at the holidays, as does
Kroger. I'll be checking which store has the better price in the coming weeks.
I don't want to be caught short if there's a butter apocalypse.  🧈

Joan is a sweet lady, but if you want to compete with her on
butter, Buy a Holstein cow. And a butter churn from the antique
store.

Next year, you'll have arm muscles bigger than kuth's.

you won't get 2lbs of butter out of a quart of heavy cream.
