They are fall-apart when peeled and dark spots inside with mostly yellow skins. I'll take a pic of what I bought last week... maybe I should wait a month?

Yesterday, I heard a loud crash in the backyard. A banana tree had fallen. Beats me why it did that. The banana is a variety called "apple banana." They have a tart and sweet taste to them and are easily recognizable because of their short stature.
My friend said to put it in a paper bag and it'll be ripe in a couple of days. Evidently a banana tree is mostly a giant grass that bears fruit one time and then dies. That's kind of sad - or is it?

Not to correct you but to add:

"Apple banana trees are perennial plants that can live for many years
and produce fruit multiple times. However, after an apple banana tree
produces a bunch of fruit, it will die back to the ground. But the
rhizome, which is the underground stem of the plant, will survive and
send up new shoots the following year. These new shoots will
eventually grow into new apple banana trees that will produce their
own bunches of fruit."

That would be correct but it depends on what you consider to be a "tree." It's always a treat to eat an apple banana. They make me feel happy after I eat one. I got some sealed in a paper bag as we speak.

Yes, I don't think a real tree has rhizomes.

I've never had one.

Plantharvests.com indicates you should have new suckers coming up to
replace it. It looks to be just the fruiting stock? There seem to be 1
or 4 others in the background over the wall?

Two of the trees are leaning at a precarious angle. I wish those things would just topple over so we don't risk having a trunk fall on our heads. One of them has a blossom on the end. It's said that you can eat those. I sure would - if I was desperate.
