Spectators at a diesel truck performance event in Indiana got a bit of
an explosive show watching a Cummins Dodge Ram blow up on the dyno, as
parts rained down on the crowd.

The 2021 Ultimate Callout Challenge took place last weekend at the Lucas
Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, Indiana and featured diesel trucks doing
everything from drag racing and sled pulls to burnouts and dyno runs.

Power Driven Diesel was there and tried to get its Dodge Ram, called The
Godfather, to hit 3,000 horsepower on the dyno. The engine was known to
be good for 2,700 HP, so the team figured they could get it to go even
higher, as they say in their explanation video.

Unfortunately, the truck’s engine exploded during the run and the
explosion was so intense that it sent parts falling into the stands.

People can be seen dodging the rain of parts in the video, but it sounds
like nobody got hurt. The spectators, given such a fiery show, cheer on
the Power Driven Diesel guys. The explosion is hardly the largest seen
at one of these shows, but it caused a surprising amount of chaos. A
piston even punched a hole in a sign.

Also, if picking up a smoking piston isn’t the most proper use for a
multi-tool, then I don’t know what is.

As the Power Driven Diesel guys explain in a video on their YouTube
channel, this was actually the second time that weekend that this truck
experienced an engine failure.

Earlier, the truck was doing about 150 mph in the quarter-mile when the
engine, receiving 250 pounds of boost at 8,000 rpm, had its valves tulip
and its camshaft lifters fail. Thankfully, Power Driven Diesel did have
a second Cummins on hand, though that one exploded, too.

The Power Driven Diesel team is known for pushing engines to the point
of blowing up and they’re always pretty chill about it. They see engine
failures as a reason to get right back up and give it another go. They
didn’t hit 3,000 HP this time, but there’s always next year. For now,
they’re happy that nobody got hurt and they even signed any parts caught
by spectators in the stands.

Thanks for sharing, I've heard similar. If I believed in a god I'd thank them for my parents choice
(when I was a schoolkid) to move the family from UK to NZ rather than USA (or AUS, which was a
close contender apparently).

I do miss a lot about the UK though but, during these times especially, I love living in NZ.

I miss stuff about how the UK was when I left in the '60s, but having

I think that's a carrot for the people who're on the fence w/r/t vaccinations. It's been shown that
people who are vaccinated are mainly protecting themselves. They still have the ability to get a
mild form of CV19 and spread it so most of the wisdom says they should still wear masks in
close-quarters gatherings.

I don't know to be honest. I think that a small % number may be quarantine facility workers. I do
know that our government made a decision a while back to voluntarily put us lower down the list for
vaccine supplies so that countries which hadn't done as good a job of handling CV19 could get
vaccines ahead of us. This despite having ordered and paid for enough vaccines for 150% of the
population very early on. Some ofthe vaccines that were destined for us have been channeled into
the 'covax' scheme so they can go to where they are desperately needed.

The current plan is for the general public (below 65, as older people can get the vaccine now) to
start large scale vaccinations in about 6 weeks. The government has stated they want to do it right
so have taken the time to ensure supply lines and to train vaccinators so that other aspects of the
health service can continue as normal and not grind to a halt while trained medical staff are taken
from their normal jobs to vaccinate the public.

explore from sub tropical forests to geothermal spectaculars to ski-fields and glaciers. Where
there are sports events and concerts with no limitations. Restaurants are full and people can come

NZ decided early on that lives were more important than money so locked down early and hard for a
month and closed our borders. Since then we've been relatively free, life is almost normal (other
than international travel being severely restricted).

Actually the economy is bouncing back quite well. The biggest reason for the economical hit was the
fact that tourism was one of NZs largest earners.

A relatively small percentage of the Australian population has been
vaccinated. There hasn't been the same urgency as in countries like the
US and European ones where people were dying in their thousands. It has
started with those most at risk, the old (like me) and front line
workers. They are just starting with 40 year olds now.

Yeah, 'people' on the whole aren't too bright and when you have social media feeding them
conspiracies we're going to hell in a handbasket. For instance yesterday in Auckland there was
about 2,000 people at a protest against compulsory vaccination - despite the government repeatedly
and loudly saying they'll NEVER make CV19 vaccines compulsory.

I laughed my arse off when I saw that in the news last night. Some of the placards they were
carrying should have been grounds for committal!

Indeed. We had one 'hard lockdown' for about a month over a year ago and a limited one in Auckland
only a few months back. Other than that (and the lack of tourism) it's basically business as usual
here.

visit as I have a criminal record for growing cannabis a few decades ago. You used to *require* a

Yep, ditto. Unemployment here is lower than pre-pandemic. Partly because seasonal workers couldn't
come in from Indonesia on working visas and work for minimum wage.

I should state that there is one very small group in NZ who ARE required to have the vaccination
and that's anyone working in the quarantine facilities. The last small outbreak in Auckland was due
to an social-media reading 20-something anti-vaxxer dickhead security guard who was working in a
quarantine facility. He'd been scheduled for his vaccine several times and had come up with excuses
as to why he didn't attend.

After that the government said that they still wouldn't make vaccines compulsory for anyone in the
country. However they would be a requirement for anyone wanting to work in a quarantine facility.

Oh, people handling freight at the airports and airplane flight and cleaning crews are also
strongly encouraged to get vaccinated. (Encouraged as in 'if you want to keep your job get the jab'.)

That's just common sense though, in the same way that you're required to wear a seatbelt in a car
or a lifejacket in a small boat. LOL, we're lucky to have those laws actually. I doubt that they'd
get passed easily in the current paranoid 'reptilian overlords are forcing me to do stuff against
my will' US social media driven climate.

I should have said 'closed the borders to all but returning citizens and people who've previously
been granted residency' (or a few other people who meet certain strict criteria).

A big reason for our economy bouncing back is the large number of highly-skilled New Zealanders who
were living and working overseas coming home and starting businesses. At the start of the pandemic
it was estimated that there were between 0.5 and 1 million NZers living and working overseas. Since
the pandemic a hell of a lot of those people wanted to come back to the relative safety and freedom
of NZ and have done so.

NZ is also dealing with record numbers of applications for residency. Thousands and thousands of
them are from the USA.

I heard in an interview on 'carb day' with one of the Scotts driving in the Indy 500 that the two
of them were going to get together with the other New Zealanders working in the garages for a group
picture. Apparently there are between 50 and 60 NZers working in pit lane (and they're just the
ones who haven't come home).
