Forgot one more thing: the second Croatian goal exposed a weakness in
Canada's keeper. When a shot is coming he stand with his feet very
wide apart, flat-footed. It's almost impossible to dive to one side
from that position. I think another keeper might have saved that
shot.

There are 2 problems with Borjan.
First, he's in poor form for a while now, been liability for Red Star,
especially in EL, I've seen Serbs wondering doesn't Canada have anything
better,
no one normal is picking a player from Serbian league. Some of them are
gloating because Red Star is hated since it's a privileged club.

Second, and I wrote this before, he said he wasn't born in Croatia, but
Serbian Krajina
which was the name for occupied territory during the war here, and he
also called Dalmatia Serbian.
It's his own fault, unnecessarily bringing politics and putting a
pressure on himself,
today some of our fans were provoking him with "Borjan, Ustasha", he
replied with infamous 3 Serbian fingers

They'd want to start playing a bit better then wouldn't they? Germany
have, for the most part, been exceedingly average... they're not the
only national team that could apply to at this World Cup but I must say
I expected more from Germany. My pre-World Cup prediction was a Brazil
- Germany Final!!!

They've surely got the quality to improve. Should Germany finish second in their group that makes a Brazil - Germany final possible (assuming that Brazil win their group).

Not really. Japan's best approach would be to play for a draw with Spain and hope (reasonably) that Germany beat CRC, which is their only chance at advancing. Otherwise, if they go all out attacking Spain and expose themselves at the back they risk almost certain defeat. Spain will also be content with a draw. Then, if Germany indeed wins, Spain are first and Japan second. True, if Germany don't win Japan are out in this scenario, but it's a risk they'll be willing to take.

I watched the game, I was curious to see Spain first of all. Not that impressive. But, 1. they did have a brilliant spell for about 20 minutes starting cca. min. 55, in which they scored. They showed their class. And 2. their objective was at least a draw, Germany needed the victory. In the end they got the draw so they probably played economically, Enrique rested some key players for the next games. So all in all they look like they could do it. We'll see when they meet some real strong opposition.

I appreciate your scenario is a possibility but Spain will presumably play for the win so as to avoid the 1st placed team from Group F. Playing for a draw makes no sense because if it backfires Japan would take first place. If it really *really* backfires and Costa Rica beat Germany Spain would be out. I can't see Spain taking that risk.

I didn't say Germany will definitely qualify but given the circumstances above they surely have a credible chance of qualifying.

Thinking it through this doesn’t work. If Japan draw with Spain and Germany beat Costa Rica then the first tiebreaker is goal difference. Germany would only need a two goal win to beat Japan on goal difference. If Germany won by one goal Japan and Germany would be level on goal difference. The next tiebreaker would be goals scored so is dependent on the scores in the final games but surely Japan would be concerned that Germany could score so many against Costa Rica as to overtake them. Given the above and my previous post I really don’t think it’s in either Spain or Japan’s interest to play for a draw. The more I think about it the more I believe it could well be an entertaining game with lots of attacking play.

Looks like you're right. I thought the first tie breaker is direct result. But it's goal difference, I checked. So yes, Germany's chances are better than I thought. I can see them beating CRC by 2 or even 3 goals.

That said, I still think Japan's best shot is to play for a draw. But even if they get it their chances are rather slim.

There are more than that.
1) His distribution is poor
2) He is not as agile or fast at getting down to shots as he used to be
3) There is always a high probability of a real howler - such as the one
that cost us against Haiti in a gold cup match a couple of years back

He was actually quite solid for Canada in qualification, to be fair.
But he was always a risk. I think a better keeper would have saved the
first two Croatia goals. They were not unstoppable.

We might, in all of Crepeau, St. Clair and Pantemis, who are all first
choice for their MLS teams. Crepeau played well in qualifying when
called on, but broke his leg (his own fault, though) in the MLS cup
final. St. Clair is the keeper of the future, but only capper 2-3 times.

I am more worried about our central defenders for the futures. This must
be the end of the line for Vitoria given his age. But none of Cornelius
or any others has really stepped up, which leaves us with only Miller
who is anywhere near good enough.

Another danger for the future development of this team is that players
will move to European teams that will give them no playing time - has
already happened with Larin (Bruges) and Laryea (Forest), and if
Johnston, Koné, and Miller also move, as is rumoured, their development
could stagnate.

David is allegedly sought after by bigger clubs than Lille, but I don't
think he is ready yet (if ever) and would also moulder on the bench.

Also linking into this (and alluded to further up the thread) - unless the United 2026 hosts pull a rabbit out of the hat with invitations to more prestigious tournaments than the Gold Cup they're all going to have limited competitive football, which surely can't help development.

I've seen this mentioned and I guess we exploited it well.

First goal definitely, possibly 2nd one, not an expert to say, but
interestingly and very unlucky for Canada,
with all 4 goals some Canadian player was nutmeged.

Few years ago when Borjan was carrying Red Star to CL and was one of
their key players it could have been a different story,
back then I couldn't even imagine we'd have him on the other side on the
World Cup.

Here's one more interesting story about him, his grandma
https://www.index.hr/magazin/clanak/baka-milana-borjana-bila-sam-ljuta-sto-ces-spominjati-krajinu-baba-ti-je-hrvatica/2416032.aspx
is a Croatian and said she was immediately mad at him for even
mentioning Krajina,
his dad is half Croat and half Serb and he turned out to be a radical
Serb, this is pure Balkan insanity.
Maybe because of his Croatian roots he needs to "prove" to Serbs he is a
bigger Serb than them, usually goes like that.

Japan is a good team and could reasonably be perceived to be a dark horse. They beat Germany because Germany was terrible at finishing their chances, and they were brilliant. Against Costa Rica, they struggled to do much against a low-block defense, and conceded on the only shot in the box they allowed to the Ticos.
