Russia is in general not a serious partner on the world stage. They have
always been a curious mix of self-aggrandisation mixed with a major
inferiority complex wrt the West. Even silly details like Putin's wristwatch
(the German-made A. Lange & Söhne) or Patriarch Kirill's (the Swiss-made
Breguet) demonstrate this schizophrenia which has been a fixture of
Russian mentality for centuries.

Another big problem with Russia is that they got into their heads that
they are an "empire" while in reality they have always been a small economy
which does not have (either mentally or financially) what it takes to
actually BE an empire. Because of that false fantasy they consider the
current situation as some sort of "temporary regress" which ought to be
"restored" to the "imperial norm". But that "norm" is an illusion, it's just
like someone pretending to be rich by flashing a credit card for which
he has no money to pay.

Fake dreamland like has been the undoing of nations since forever.
Putin is merely the latest victim of that mental trap. He'll be lucky
if he walks out of it unscathed. The basic problem for the world is
that people in an emotional situation like his can become unpredictable
and extremely evil.
