Einstein's thought "experiment" of a train and lightning bolts allegedly proving simultaneity is relative is not a logical argument because he doesn't state the implicit assumption that he (characteristically) sought to prove by circular reasoning. He was just asserting the Lorentz transformation and time dilation, so it follows that simultaneity does not exist. He wasn't exactly a forthright person. Same thing with E=MC2. AS Ives and others have proven, he just assumed what he claimed to derive.

physicists postulate relativity and sane people
postulate a preferred frame.

Thought experiments never prove anything. They are simply a teaching
tool to demonstrate something already theorized or proven.

Of course. He rederived the Lorentz transformation previously, and now
he's trying to show with a thought experiment why the Lorentz
transformation leads to relative simultaneity.

Of course people were incredulous when told that simultaneity is not
absolute, the train/lightning bolt thought experiment was created for
those willing to learn to understand it.

If you read his papers (not thought experiments), you'll see this is not so.
