What does distance have to do with the quality of a task? If you used 95% or 99% of what was available for the day, you have done well.

George Moffat warned of focusing on records and distance in his book Winning on the wind. Pilot A flies 500K and pilot B flys 300K, which had a better flight? It depends. If pilot A flew a glider at a location on that day that would have allowed a 1000k flight, then his flight wasn't that good; if Pilot B flew 95% of what was possible for the weather and her glider at her site for the day se flew a great flight.

In general the tasking at Montlucon as gotten every ounce of energy from the weather that was availbe. Often we have started tasks after 4 pm (there was no start gate games) and flown for three hours or more to only have 30% or less finsh the task.

The last day was a classic example of using every once of enegy in the sky.

If your only criteria what constitutes which flight is "better" is % of the day utilized, then perhaps you need to expand your possibilities.

Tim,
Great job in pacing with the great Sebastian Kawa at least twice! ....and to the rest of the team and their individual performances. A few questions: (1) Since you flew against him, did you get any clues as to how Kawa does what he does to stay on top all these years in a variety of classes? (2) What's your opinion of the Diana 2, which seems not to get a lot of coverage (e.g., is it the "pod" design with narrow cockpit or wing profile?)?, and (3) On the last day, if you run Kawa's IGC in SeeYou against his teammate's in BB (also in a Diana 2), it is a great example of team flying (also called the ultimate "leaching" I suppose if you're from the same country). The tracings (viewed in zoomed 3D) show them like velcro until the last thermal where Kawa outclimbs his mate. Your tracing against Kawa indicates different strategies. Often you fly right by Kawa's marked thermals, other times vice versa. SeeYou stats is a remarkable tool in that it displays time circling, alt gain per thermal, interthermal speeds, etc. to compare with other pilots. Can you share a few of your decision-making strategies either on this day or others? (pls write in terms to someone not having their silver distance yet!).
Thanks,
Phyllis

Just to close out my initial comment - once the IDs got sorted out it became a lot more fun to watch the races. On a couple of days, I found myself pulling/pushing along with the pilot I was watching. Unfortunately, my office desk has a lousy L/D.

That points directly to the choice of the contest, Montlucon.

Unfortunately, my office desk has a lousy L/D.

Really? I bet your desk has a better L/D than any glider in the world, unless your office floor is quicksand. A zero sink rate is hard to beat. But a Vne of zero isn't much good.

If pilot A flew a glider at a location on that day that would have allowed a 1000k flight, then his flight wasn't that good; if Pilot B flew 95% of what was possible for the weather and her glider at her site for the day se flew a great flight.
