The direct answer is you can't find "the server", because Usenet (where
rec.aviation.soaring resides) is actually numerous independent servers scattered around
the world and the internet, and Daryl's post's are coming from many, maybe even all of them.

Groups is not a standard Google Group that has owners, moderators, etc., but is just a
conduit for rec.aviation.soaring on Usenet, which is unmoderated. You can not change how
Usenet works, but you can change how you get Usenet, and block posters like Daryl, with a
Usenet reader. This ability is built into some email programs, like Thunderbird, or you
can use a dedicated Usenet reader.

Without a reader of some sort, Daryl will find you.

I haven't even seen one of The Crazy Canadian's posts in a couple of
years. I simply created a rule to ignore them as I've done many times
for any spam which gets past my email provider's spam blocker.

I still enjoy the "banter" between certain folks!

So there was once a guy named Lars (somebody) who had a server dumping a "Dream FAQ" in alt.dreams once a month (for what must've been *years!*) yet eventually stopped (thank God!!!)

It was my understanding that there was only *one* source that was dumping that content into the Usenet system.

Thus, with the squeaker's spam, it has to be originating from *somewhere* and the question is, how to find that source and "give it a rest," so to speak?

Sadly, I've long since switched to using "Google Groups" and thus suspect a very limited amount of filtering capability. IF anyone has a suggestion on where/how to start, I'd be interested in picking up any pointers.

(The old DOS-based newsreaders had *no problem* in creating spam filters.)

As an alternative path, I'd also be interested in learning if there's any way to address an admin-type level of the alt.dreams group, so as to attain a "moderator" status, if possible.

If you use Thunderbird as your email client and news reader it's easy
and there are probably other email clients that will let you do the
same. Since I use Thunderbird, I can tell how I filter spam on RAS.

The first time you see a post that you want to block proceed as follows:

Right click in the From address field
Select "Create filter from..."
Select the "Match any of the following: button

In the pull down below select Subject, From, Body, then move to the
right and select a condition. I generally select "contains" and then
the email address of whomever I want to block or some subset of the
first condition, e.g., from, body, subject, etc.

And then select OK. The rule is now created. You can run it manually
and it will run automatically every time thereafter that you or your
system checks for messages.

So my filter rule would look something like, If From Contains Kabatoff,
Ignore Message.

There are other ways; just go through the menus, assuming you're using
an email client.

You've got it in one: what's now known as Google Groups used to be called
DejaVue: tiy may remember it. I don't think the Googly ones modified it at
all: it (or its server) still archives all NNTP messages and the former
DejaVue is still just a search tool for accessing the NNTP archive that
Google maintains.

So, if you want the ability to ignore posters you don't like, install
either an 'old DOS-based newsreader' or one of the GUI-based ones (Pan and
Thunderbird run under Linux and Windows, allow you to block trolls and are
free).

While I sincerely appreciate the effort, sadly, I've been using "google groups" in a browser window, and as such, filtering spam may be a totally different issue, certainly unlike using a DOS-based program, or a modern droid (or phone) app.

Yeah, I read your "idea" for the earth-saving flying saucer. I couldn't stop laughing. Glad you took the time to inform us that the passenger couches could be fitted with car seats for infants, but you didn't spend much effort on showing any sort of design for the propulsion system, except to claim that it is "viable." And maybe you should have explained a bit more about how the entire fuselage "could" be a 3D printed battery. My advice is to put the bong down and maybe take some Engineering classes.

The basic "flying donut" ring-shape would lend itself to arc-shaped couch-type benches. Again, a type of plastic best suited for a faux-leather texture would be optimum, as the plastic structure is *key* to the energy source..

That's because I lack the aeronautical engineering to "fit" parts A to B, etc. I do realize, however, that X pounds of thrust would be needed from a centrally-mounted (gimbal mount-type) fan, and that (after the manual, directional prototype is established) a computer-interface will inevitably be needed to make it more akin to a "self-driving car" although more like the Apollo command modules, where the astronauts "told" the computer what to do.

Well, that would be giving away "the whole playbook," as it were. Just know that it is "doable" and that such has already got a patent in place. It's simply a matter for the lawyers to hammer out regarding integrating "patent A" *within* "patent B".

I left the bong age decades ago. Also, there exists ample reason as to why engineering classes would be like trying to reinvent water in order to flow under the log bridge. Placing a log over a ditch requires no engineering degree. What would be helpful, however, is to have an engineer with a questioning mind consider forming a partnership to accomplish the goal.

The best part of the plan, in my opinion, comes in foreseeing the air space saturated with the vehicles, thus the need to establish "flight levels" (traffic corridors) based upon directional vectors (which way the vehicle is heading) and the equivalent of "social distancing" once airborne, as distancing is *vital* when it comes to human-based flight.

Yup, I started to read the Jetson thing but lost interest.

Five Juliet comes from the early 90s when I took a partner in a glider
and we needed a contest call sign. 5J was available and non
controversial (I would have taken Sierra Hotel, the motto of my USAF
flight training class, or Tango Uniform) so we agreed to buy 5J from
SSA. After my partner retired from soaring it was easier to just keep
the call sign that I was used to. I still use it even though the SSA
says I no longer own it. It has no further meaning than that.

But, as to the Crazy Canadian I would prefer that he not be censored
because it violates his basic right to speak. Just as I have the basic
right not to listen or read what he has to say.

As you may be aware, visibility during flight is something of a matter of life-and-death. I was thinking the "air traffic corridor" system would be interesting in a highly-populated air space (think of the traffic volume of the busiest interstate you've ever traveled, and then imagine all those cars flowing along a corridor in the sky.) Some day, there will be a need for a "new system" of traffic protocols, just as there was during the transition from horse-and-buggy to the horseless carriage.

Reminds me of my old "CB license" (KIO-9085) and "amateur radio" call signs (WN4-JVT and WA4-JVT). Talk about dusting off the cobwebs! :-)

I see a difference between ending a spam repeater (like lifting the needle off a skipping record) verses denying someone the right to free speech.

Right. I still need to "look into" any *possible* "filters" that may be available in Google Groups. Still, that only spares the individual, whereas lifting the needle off the record decongests the information highway (opens up the available bandwidth / lightens the load on all the servers around the globe.)

Maybe you're fine with seeing spam advertisements, but most people
aren't. That's what I'm talking about deleting. I'm not talking about
banning someone because they have someone an opinion others disagree with.
