Are you using an actual mouse, or a trackpad? The latter makes it harder.

With a real mouse, click and hold at the top left where you want to
select, keep holding the mouse button while you drag to the bottom right
of the selection, then release ...

start by pressing and holding over one word in the section you want to
select (as you already know how to) then notice you've got a start and
end selection marker left and right of that word, you can drag those
markers to extend the selection, probably get a magnifier to help you
see when your finger is in the way ...

It is possible to select a swap of text, because sometimes I do this
by accident. But when I need it to delete several lines of text I do
not know how to select them. How can I select (parts of) several lines
to delete text, so I do not have to do that character for character?

I know to select a word: I have to double tab on it.

I find it's much easier to use a mouse and keyboard than my fingers.
The steps are exactly the same with mouse & keyboard - only better.

When I'm at home, I just sit at the computer, like you do, and type on my
Android phone using the computer mouse and keyboard - just like you do.

In the past I had one, maybe a good idea to get one again.

When at home, I use a real computer, and that's not Android-anything or
mobile-anything. I don't use a mobile platform as a desktop PC. I
grant using a mobile device in place of a desktop PC is possible, like
when the desktop PC goes dead and needs repair, but I'd rather use my
laptop as a temporary desktop.

I get the type that is both a stylus and a pen. I stow one in the car,
at my desks at home, in my travel bag, at my work desk, and slide into a
pocket in the belt holster for the phone (it's too big to put into a
pocket). Gives me both a stylus for the phone, and a pen for writing.

In your reply to Cecil where you also mention remoting across a LAN, I
asked if you could elaborate on your setup. I'd like to know.

I replied to that response because you thought it needed USB or Bluetooth.
You don't need USB or Bluetooth - but it's easier with USB than Wi-Fi.

You don't need to install anything on Android if you have a modern version.
You use your PC keyboard & mouse to type onto the Android phone.

The Android phone can be hundreds of feet away.
The Android phone just has to be on the same local network as is your PC.

Is your Android phone on the same local area network as your computer?
If yes, what is stopping you from just doing it?

You don't need USB or Bluetooth - but it's easier with USB than Wi-Fi.
But that's only because there are extra steps on Android using Wi-Fi.

Why should it not work? At the same time you can have BT connection to
your audio device and more.

Oh, so what you're describing without saying it is to mirror (aka screen
casting) the phone's screen on my desktop's monitor. Not all
smartphones have the same features. Phone makers customize the Android
to stamp it as their own. It's how they differentiate themselves from
other phone makers. LG, the maker of my phone (who discontinued the V20
back in 2019, left the smartphone market, so there will be no OS
updates), never included screen casting as a feature in the Android
settings. I'm still stuck back on Android 8.0.0, and will be there
forever on my current phone. LG didn't include a screen casting
feature, and there never will be one on my phone. So, you're describing
a feature on your unidentified phone running an unidentified Android
version as though the feature is available for everyone, but it isn't.

I've done screen mirroring before using AirDroid. Looks like they split
it up into 2 products: AirDroid Personal, and AirDroid Cast. It was
interesting, but rather an inane process of using my desktop to mirror
and remote input to my smartphone. After all, if I'm on a desktop PC,
why the hell would I bother devolving down to a toy computer? I'm on
the desktop, so I'll use the far superior desktop.

There might be some use of screen casting a smartphone to a desktop PC,
like a user wanting to play an Android game on their desktop. No need
for that, though, since you can use Bluestacks to run Android apps on a
Windows host, and, I think, Windows 11 finally got updated so it can run
Android apps. I'm still back on Windows 10, and my phone with an old
Android version doesn't have a screencast feature, and never will, so
I'd have to use 3rd party software to effect the same mirroring.

Tethering my smartphone to my desktop is like pulling my car using a
little red wagon. Doable, but stupid since I've obviously already got
the car to use. I can't see using a smartphone screencast'ed to a
desktop PC to do anything on the smartphone that I could obviously do
much easier on the desktop PC. The setup is possible, but smacks of a
Rube Goldberg setup. Why would I cripple my desktop PC but channeling
its use through a smartphone?

If you're already using a real computer anyway, why not throw the Android
display onto it? That way you can use a real mouse & keyboard on Android.

Throwing your phone display onto a computer to "cast" it is native on all
Android since at least Android 4 I think. It just gets better every year.

Like I said, casting onto the computer has been around since Android 4 or
even earlier but it just gets better every year. In your situation, since
you're stuck on Android 8, you can cast the Android phone to the computer
over Wi-Fi but you first have to establish the TCP/IP port 555 on USB.

With Android 11 and up, you don't need to first establish the port on USB.

You don't need to install anything on Android although I'm sure someone
will love to sell you a product but I put nothing on Android to cast my
Android screen onto my computer where computer mouse & keyboard work fine.

> There might be some use of screen casting a smartphone to a desktop PC,

The Android display and sound are cast onto your computer without adding
any software to Android (it's 100% native Android) but you can also use
emulation on the pc if what you specifically want to do is play a game.

The reason I suggest emulation if you want to cast a game onto the computer
is mainly because the computer usually has more compute power and memory
and the computer also may have a better graphics processor for game play.

I've done both.

I like Genymotion instead of Bluestacks but you can also use Andyroid.
Their only advantage is the Android executable is run on the computer.

With casting, everything is run on Android native where the mouse and
keyboard are just additional ways to interact with the Android phone.

If you think displaying Android onto the computer is "rube goldberging",
then you don't understand how easy it is to cast Android onto the pc.

Like I said, Android native casting gets better every year, but on your
older Android, you'll have to momentarily establish the port with the USB.

Then you can disconnect the USB once you've established the port and the
rest of the time it works over Wi-Fi (until you reboot the Android phone).

I long-tap somewhere in the text that I want to select. The word I
long-tapped on gets selected with selector handles on each side of the
word, and the Cut/Copy/Paste/Share popup appears. I drag the selectors
to encompass what text I want to copy or cut. Fingers make lousy
pointers, so you might want to use a stylus pen.

I don't know what "engine" handles copying and pasting text on Android
(i.e., whether it's a "launcher engine" or a "native Android engine", but I
will say that when I select text using my mouse & keyboard, it works as
Andy Burns said it does.

Above is a screenshot of me selecting text using the keyboard & mouse just
now, where the PC clipboard, keyboard and mouse work on Android as stated.

When on the move, I only carry my smartphone in a belt holster. Toting
around a mouse and keyboard would not only be a major nuisance, but make
me look silly with all those accoutrements hanging from my belt.
However, a stylus pen (rubber tip one end, ink pen other end) easily
slides in my belt holster which has a sleeve for a stylus.

When travelling, and using my smartphone instead of toting along a
tablet, I still don't bother toting along a keyboard and mouse. I just
use a stylus. However, despite having a large smartphone, most times
when travelling I stow a tablet in carry-on luggage to use while
travelling or at the destination. My fingers are okay, a stylus is
better, but a keyboard and mouse would oversize my carry-on bag. Since
women are allowed to bring on a carry-on bag and purse, I could start
carrying a tote bag with a keyboard, mouse, and yadda yadda as long as
it stowed under a seat, but I really don't want the onus of toting
around another bag when flying. I'm a guy, so if stuff fits in my
pockets then it might go with me, like a power pack to extend my
smarphone's battery time. If I wanted to carry more pocketable stuff,
I'd wear cargo pants, but a keyboard wouldn't fit in the pockets. A
mouse might fit, but be a nuisancesome bulge, especially when squished
into the tight plane seats.

When at home, I don't use my smartphone. Instead I use a real computer,
like desktop PC which has a keyboard and mouse.

Of the choices for input to a smartphone, you'll likely have all your
fingers with you, a stylus is very minimally sized if fingering is too
hard, but a keyboard and mouse is really for when that mobile device has
been relegated to a fixed device, like you're leaving it sitting at home
on a desk, and there isn't a decent computer (desktop) available in lieu
of a toy computer (smartphone).

Certainly not an option for me. I use a real computer whenever possible.
Mobile devices are workarounds when on the move at best. Not more.
