How is it the phone can show 5 bars, but some of the apps like whatsapp
say it's not connected to the net? This happened today, nothing needing
the net worked, even though I had 5 bars, until I drove about 4 miles
back to Esquipulas, a small town in SE Guatemala. (Their big festival
is today, January 15, but I was only there yesterday).

Maybe related: I often listen to the news, MSNBC usually which I don't
recommend but have to tell you which app I use, and I'm pretty sure it
buffers the signal data so that the sound continues 5 or 10 minutes
after I no longer am receiving the signal**. Is that correct?

Does the amount of buffered time increase if you bought a phone with a
lot of RAM? Or if the app knows there is more unused RAM than at some
other time?

Or do they generally just keep the same amount in the buffer despite
other things that vary?

**Another reason I think that the signal data is greatly buffered is
that I can listen to the web-radio almost everywhere I've been, some
pretty rural locations, and it's hard to believe there are so many cell
towers where so few people live.

Micky say he is using Tigo. Not sure what web site he was given. The
one I found is:

Since he got cellular data when he moved to another area, could be due
to roaming service is not included in his current plan. Click on
Roaming. Looks like it isn't included unless you buy it. I didn't
spend much time digging through the web site to see what combo plans
they offer.

Well, phone signal, but no data or not compatible with your phone
(2/3/4/5 G). Or no roaming contract.

Here at home, I had to update a phone because it was unable to connect
using 4G (maybe faulty firmware), and the telco just dropped 3G, so no
data.

It is up to the programmer.

Certainly with more RAM there are more chances that software can make
use of it.

Years ago I read that Africa was deploying a good mobile network instead
of landline, because it is cheaper. Consider laying down all that cable,
specially on earth-paved "urban" areas, or rural areas. So instead they
go for mobile, and try to cover the entire territory. Guatemala is not
that big.

I always get confused which Lilliputian status icon is for the Wi-Fi and
which is for the cellular data. Are the bars for the Wi-Fi or roaming?

I don't think so. Tigo is for all of Guatemala. Today I'm going to
Copan, or maybe it's Coban, which is 5 or 10 miles into Honduras. If
you hadn't said this I wouldn't have thought to see how it works there.
But I'm just looking at some Indian ruins and coming right back.

Everything else was in Guatemala. In fact there was a Tigo phone
store, with loads of models of phones and lots of accessories in
Esquipulas.

I have another problem which I think is solely becaus of the service. I
can use Whatsapp but no longer use the original dialer (to call the US.
I haven't needed to call anyone in Guat.) I get a recording which I
think says to dial again. I think *that* is because I'm 5 hours from
Guatemala city where it used to work and it will work when I return. Yes
that sounds like roaming but I think it's more an unintended limitation
on their system.

(The problem I aasked about here first was data. I was only 1 mile from
where it worked earlier and later, and I was 1 mile closer to the bulk
of the country. It's mountainous and very hilly** and I can easily
understand no coverage some place, even many places, but why did it show
5 bars!) I went in and asked her, in fairly clear Spanish, and she
fiddled with it a little. Erased my recent list, and I began to wonder
if she'd make it worse, but she gave up quickly.

**Along the Pan-Am highway, and the SE part, you can't go a 10th of a
mile without a sharp curve and are almost always going uphill or
downhill. There are signs to break with your motor.

Interesting. At the top are monthly plansm but the 3rd row, third
choice is mine. 99 Quetzals is about $13.

I think the woman in the Tigo store looked at roaming. I should have
looked over her shoulder from the beginning. She didn't object when I
did.

Nothing here about only part of the country. That's why I got Tigo,
because 2 or 3 people said it was better than Claro for outside the main
cities. I told them where I was going and they said nothing about
needing any roaming. (Trip advisor.)

Bars are for data. I guess I should call it roaming to distinguish from
wifi, but it's for data even when your sitting in your living room. I
guess some homebodies don't roam far.

The concentric quarter circles are for wifi.

Probably time to contact Tigo's tech support instead of asking some
sales rep that probably can't even tell you the address where she works.
Be careful with their web site links as a lot of them point at the
WhatsApp web site.

Ask them if their claimed wide cellular voice coverage also includes
similarly wide cellular data coverage.

Actually, the bars are for "telephone", or "signal from telephone
tower". It is the same signal for data as well, yes.

Bars are for signal strength to the cell tower whether or not you get a
data connection there: RF between your phone and the tower, not whether
you get a particular service type from the tower. Whether you get
cellular data depends if the cell tower to which you connect has a data
hub aka Internet exchange; for locations, see
https://www.internetexchangemap.com/. There's one in Guatamala City,
another in Belize City, and another in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Towers are usually connected to a data center via [fiber optic] cables
which may be underground, or above ground running along telephone poles.
In rural areas or over large expanses, or where cabling would be
difficult or cost prohibitive, the towers have large microwave
transceivers, but uwave transceivers are line of sight. When looking at
a cell tower, cellular antennae (http://networks.land/assets/ref-4.JPG)
look different than uwave (http://networks.land/assets/ref-6.JPG). To
get over a mountain requires towers at the top with uwave transceivers.
Someone might've been digging to damage a cable. Someone might've
constructed a building that blocks the uwave, so another tower is needed
to get around the building, or one added to the top of the building (but
other uwave antennae would need realignment). You might be in an area
where cell towers don't have a data hub, or there is an outage but
repairs have not yet been effected.

No problem.

Today the problems got worse.

Tried to make video call to US. Completed 3 times but closed
immediately.

Audio call would not work.

Translate would not work.

Navigation would not work.

Finally thought to look at my texts. 6:53 this morning a text that says
I've run out of days or minutes.

Yes, the 3 gigs I bought last Sunday for a week are expired, but 3 hours
earlier I bought 10gigs for a month. I wondered if they would,
propperly, use up the one-week amount before starting on the one-month
amount, and they did, but they never gave me credit for the one month,
though I got a text saying I had it.

Now I've spent 52 minutes just trying to connect with their bot.

They made me update Whatsapp but the update "has failed. An error in
statallation. See log" but the log means nothing to me.

Leaving the PC and back to the phone to complain.

This may sound like I'm trying to connect the phone to the net or
something. The phone got extended about 28 hours when I went to the
webpage they gave, for people to fix the problem that they are
disconnected. As I said, I'm trying to connect to the bot and they put
other obstacles in the way of that.

It's not the phone signal. It's that they screwed up my account and
claim I've used up all my time and data.

Managed to stay on the PC and use Whatsapp for web. I prefer the pc to
the phone because the keyboard is better.

After answering the bots questions and saying none of the suggestions
worked, I got a person (text chatting only) and he claimed I'd used up
my data, even though I've never used 3gigs in one week in my life, I
think, and certainly when I only have about 45 minutes a night for the
PC. Well I did watch about 10 minutes of videos and do about 2 hours of
video phone calling

minutes to reply and translate, he was already saying So long.

Stick to Claro in Guatemala and avoid Tigo.

What's ironic is that I have to go find a place to buy a claro card
(only $1.30 for the sim) and some minutes, when I'm supposed to take a
boat trip at 9:20 tomorrow morning, or I can buy more tigo time without
leaving my chair. I'm not going to cut off my nose to spite my face,
so i guess I'll buy 2 weeks of the disgusting tigo.

How much can you expect to use during a video call though? For WhatsApp
video calls, you can expect to use around 2.5MB of data per minute. This
figure also varies based on the strength of the signal of your
connection.

So to use a gig I would have to make video calls for 400 minutes. 3
hours 40 minutes, in just 7 days when most of these 7 days I didn't do
video callig at all. I didn't come close to 3 hours 40 minutes, did I
Miss A?

And that's only 1 gig. They claim I used 13.
13 gigs would be 47 hours of video calling or maybe movie watching in 7
days. No way.

Your phone doesn't have a data manager to show you the usage of mobile
and wifi usage? For my phone (LG V20), it's under Android settings ->
Network -> Data Manager.

My aunt had setup a web cam in her home to watch her sister (my mom)
while she was away. She would watch the web cam to make sure her sister
was okay. She sucked down all her cellular data quota in a couple days
(she uses Tracfone which has a data quota, not unlimited like other
plans). Was easy to discover what had eaten all her data quota by going
into the data manager to see how much bandwidth was consumed by which
apps.

The one that's built in seems to show only today's usage. For me it's
under Connection and Sharing, Data Usage, and it says the same thing it
said around noon today, 408MB for Whatsapp and 115MB for system apps.

This is fine because I spent about 30 minutes and then 15 minutes
sending video to my friend in the USA. Take 60/45 and that's about
560MB per hour, which is on the low end of what those quotes said.

I reviewed what I had done with my friend and only two days prior to
today did I do any video. One for a full hour -- I noticed -- and one
for 30 or 40 minutes. (The other 5 days we just talked or on the weekend
didn't connect at all.) So that's about 1 gig or a little more, and
I'm willing to believe I used up the 3gig package, but there is no way I
used up the 10 gig package.

I thought I had an app that gave better usage data, but I never used it
after the first week. Mmaybe it was on a previous phone. I'll look for
it.

But I bought more data from the people I dislike last night around 11,
got an email right away, and it worked this morning, (maybe even right
away but I was using the hotel's wifi.) I paid for 2 weeks this time,
but I'm out of energy and if tonight's sleep doesn't rejuvenat me, will
come home in 3 or 4 days. (Big charge with Spirit for changing
reservation, but they are the only ones that fly here fr om Florida
without going to Texas first.)

Mine lets me pick the range for data points. The default is the last
month, but I can pick to see bandwidth usage for prior months, and I can
change the cycle (day of the month). Mine shows (with a cycle date of
the 25th of the month):

Since wifi data usage is when connecting to my home hotspot (router), at
the resort's wifi hotspot, or whatever wifi hotspot I happen to use
wherever I am (wifi is the preferred connection method with cellular
data second), I tend to use a lot of wifi bandwidth. Other than when I
was on vacation in November, I don't make or get many phone calls, and
the vast majority of my web browsing or other web-centric apps on my
phone when at home is via wifi, not cellular data. When at home, my
calls are via wifi, and little cellular voice.

With my current plan, data quota is unlimited. However, previously my
data quota was 1 TB, so only 1 month in the last 4 (history only shows 4
months) was over my old data quota. That was when I was on a trip, and
used my smartphone a lot for web browsing to buy tickets, get theme park
hours and maps, check dinner theaters, and so on. I stopped bringing my
netbook once I got a smartphone with a big enough screen that I could
read with my old eyes, but it's too bulky for pocket carry, especially
with the armor case around the phone, so I use a belt holster.

Even when web browsing, I rarely watch videos, TV shows, listen to
music, or other amusement on my phone. It's mostly for productive work,
very little for entertainment. Even when on vacation, I only used up a
1.2 GB of cellular data, and that was more than 10 times my normal usage
when at home.

Wifi consumption shouldn't matter regarding how much quota you bought or
renewed with the SIM card you got from Tigo. It would be just the
cellular voice and cellular data that would chew up the quota you paids
from them. What do you see on your unidentified smartphone when you
hunt through the Android settings to see data usage (cellular or wifi)?

That's Google's navpath to see bandwidth consumption. Navpath will vary
by whatever brand and model phone you have.

Under Data Manager, there is an option to enable Data Saver mode, but
I've never used it. Might be something you look into.

Assuming you used whatsapp, there is a setting to conserve bandwidth or
data on calls/video calls.

They count both up and dn streams.

The ISP web page might have a graphics showing your data usage per day.

If you need to look into data usage, get a real/seperate data manager.

I use, already for a long, long time:

It gives insight in data usage for Mobile or/and Wi-Fi or/and Roaming
data. Per Month, Week, Day and hour. And most importantly, it gives per
app data usage, per Month, Week, Day and Hour. You can also set several
alarms for each of the data categories, to warn you *before* you get
into trouble.

My Data Manager, don't leave home without it!
