Fortunately for these prospective organ-donors, there's a huge full-service regional hospital to one side of the road and a huge mall to the other side where, if they make it alive out of the maelstrom of car and trucks and buses, they can buy calming chemicals... If these unfortunate cyclists live in the suburbs on the two-lane side of the lights, or study in the technical college a couple of miles down the two-lane side, bad luck. It's known as Organ Donor Drive among the junior medical staff. To rub it in, when a cyclist makes it to the front door of the hospital, the first thing he sees is a poster advertising for organ donations. -- AJ
My favorite screw up is a bike lane that ends going into a tunnel on a fairly busy road in South San Francisco. When you cone out the other end you are in the left lanes of a freeway exit. If you're watching the traffic approaching the tunnel you miss the bicycle turn here sign which takes you in a LONG misdirection to avoid this. If you end up in the left lanes leaving the tunnel you have to hope that there is a wide enough opening to cross four lanes to get across to the bike lane.

Flunky used to talk about racing and Russell used to invent stuff he had after I mentioned it. But it was always the wrong stuff. The 10 speed Di2 was so bad that I believe that it was gone after just one year. And there was no replacements for any of it. A heavy carbon fiber bike sort of loses the only advantage of a carbon fiber bike but retains all of the disadvantages of voids that cause failures. Frank used old steel bikes. Nothing wrong with that but you don't pretend that the problems with other materials somehow makes steel better. After all I am presently building a steel bike that appears like it will come in within a lb of the carbon fiber bikes I had. John and Lieberman are not cyclists and post here for no other reason than to argue. What in the hell is Scharf? Does he think he is garnering votes here?

Tommy, you will have to tell me what I invented. Not surprisingly, I don't ever recall saying I invented anything on this forum. So please tell me what I invented. I'd like to know.

> But it was always the wrong stuff. The 10 speed Di2 was so bad that I believe that it was gone after just one year.

Shimano 7970 Di2, the first Di2, lasted about 2 years. Maybe three. Shimano introduced it just before rolling out 11 speed cassettes and shifters. If they had invented it at the very beginning of ten speed gearing, then it would have been around for about a decade. Shimano's last mechanical ten speed group, 7900, was also only around for a few years. It came out just before the switch to eleven speed. So no matter how great it was, it was not going to be around long. Its kind of like the last 26" mountain bikes. It doesn't matter that they may have been the best of the best of the best when they were introduced. Everyone wanted 29" bikes then. So the last great 26" mountain bikes were just thrown onto the scrap pile. Didn't matter if they were great or not. They were out of date already.

As for Shimano 7970 Di2, I of course own and use it on one bike. It has always performed perfectly since day one. Can't get any better than it. Perfection times ten times ten times ten. Tommy, please elucidate us with your tales of using Shimano 7970. If you have used it that is.

> And there was no replacements for any of it.

What is the point of replacing it if it works perfectly and never breaks? Now I understand the theory behind warranties and replacement parts. But I figure its better to start with quality and then you don't have to worry about replacing it under warranty. My family has owned several Toyota cars. They came with some kind of warranty. But who cares if the car runs forever and never breaks down. Use your brain Tommy. Get perfection originally and then you don't have to fret and worry about replacement. Educated people know these things.

Well, the very first "mountain Bikes" were just single speed, coaster
brake, bikes with big fat 2 inch? tires. They were originally called
"clunkers" but when Joe Breezer built some ten brand new "clunkers" he
didn't thing that was an appropriate name so he called them "Mountain
Bikes". Five speed, 26 inch wheels (:-)

And it hurts.
Michelin dropped their VR speed rated tire in the size for
my car and then a year later dropped all models in that
size. One man's ugly is another's cool:

I assume that isn't your car, Andrew. It's a good-looking muscle car, if one doesn't care about function, but a tyre that high will require either new differential ratios, a whole new differential, or a different gearbox, or possibly even both, or it will not accelerate as fast as before and probably won't be as much faster in top speed as the owner hoped because there the limit is aerodynamics. I'd also like to see the inner city roads one could ride it on without the tyre interfering with the fender.
