It is my opinion that someone found guilty of something like that himself be stabbed 67 times carefully so that it will take them a long time to bleed out and think about what they did. As you can see, I'm not a "no death penalty" type.

I found one of those paint sample card books with about 1300 paint chips
once while commuting. So much more useful than a severed head.

Well, there's a conundrum.

I'm not opposed to death penalty in principle.

In the real world, where those who apply it (either official
or extralegal/unofficial) have a disturbing habit of
applying it to innocents, not so much.

If The Powers That Be were either competent or honest I'd be
in favor of death penalty. Either one would do, actually.

I understand your position but I think perhaps a part of that is the total loss of confidence in the judicial system brought on by the Democrats, cancel culture and the like. Even though I personally don't like Ketanji Brown Jackson since she comes from Bidenville, I believe that the importance of the Supreme Court will make its mark upon her and she will issue decisions that are well thought out and reasoned. And there's nothing that the left hates more than honesty.

I think that maybe I worry more about bias in the justice system than you do since I watched it in action too much. You should watch the leftist police chiefs on the nightly news here. This morning a woman was fed up that in front of the school across the street from her, the flagpole had the national flags of practically every communist central and south American state and the BLM fake flag. The police tried to charge her but it was on public property and there's no law against taking a flag down. That won't last long.. Once upon a time the law said that in front of schools they would only fly the California flag UNDER the stars and stripes.

Yesterday, someone posted on a local Facebook cycling site that they had
lost their GoPro camera on a cycling path.

Yesterday, someone posted in my local Nextdoor neighborhood posted that
they had found a GoPro camera on the same cycling path.

I was able to connect the two people and the person got their GoPro back.

I was pretty amazed that it all worked out.

Gads.

I'm much happier finding the odd tool--the greatest prize being a 12" BRASS
crescent wrench.

I'm guessing it was for something that dare not spark.

My God, that was really disgusting, but funny.

Interesting! I've heard of non-sparking tools, but never came across one.

I've wished that I kept a list of all the tools I found while riding. It would be a pretty long list.
My favorite find was a complete socket set including case and ratchet handle. It took a couple
minutes of running around to locate all the sockets, but I did find them all.

My worst miss was an $80 Leatherman tool. My riding buddy who was right behind me got it.

I once found one of those obnoxious flashing bicycle lights, still
flashing, at one of a bike trail's rest stops. I asumed, that since it
was near a trash can, someone had intended it to to be in the can, so
I put it there for them.

Super-Duper bonus points if the socket set were a quality brand...Craftsman,
Thorsen, Plumb, Snap-On and the like vs. Honest Bob's cheap import Socket
set.
I once found a big bunch 'o' sockets (sans driver or extensions) one time as
well. Huzzah.

>Interesting! I've heard of non-sparking tools, but never came across one.

They're expensive. Also known as intrinsically safe tools. They're
made from beryllium, aluminum-copper, bronze, and brass. The basic
requirements are no carbon in the alloy and nothing that creates
shavings when rubbed. If you're thinking of titanium tools, they
won't qualify. Titanium shavings will rapidly oxidize and
spontaneously combust.

I have a few such non-sparking tools from when I was working on
intrinsically safe handheld radios. The lucky mechanics used them
while working inside a large chemical storage tank that had previously
been full of volatile and explosive liquids. One tiny spark and the
tank could easily go "boom":
<https://www.google.com/search?q=intrinsically+safe+tools>
<https://www.google.com/search?q=non+sparking+tools&tbm=isch>
<https://www.google.com/search?q=non+sparking+tool+sets&tbm=isch>

Note the high prices:
<https://www.toolots.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=non-sparking>
<https://www.toolots.com/tools/non-sparking-tools/non-sparking-tool-sets.html/ng-frontend//#/categories/list?id=2000&title=Non-Sparking%20Tool%20Sets>

If you're thinking of buying such tools, be careful that you don't buy
steel tools that have been electroplated with brass or bronze. They
might be good for some applications, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.

Sadly, that socket set was toward the other end of the quality scale. IIRC I ended up giving it
away to one of our kids. They don't make as heavy use of tools as I do.

But it was well worth every penny I paid!

I've never seen a titanium fire, but our machinist told about experiencing one.
I guess it was small, but still pretty spectacular.

I intentionally started a titanium fire from lathe turnings to see
what it was like. It ignited easily and melted a hole in the steel
baking pan on which it was burning.

Spoiler: It only takes a few hot chips from a grinder to start a
titanium fire.

I did watch your two references but the "shavings" weren't very
clearly shown.

You mention that you started a fire from lathe turnings. Could you
estimate how thick and perhaps wide the cuttings were?

I'm not arguing but it does make a difference what size "kindling" you
are trying to ignite (:-)

I'll try, but since I didn't do the turning, I don't know the speeds
and feeds setup for the job. I would guess a chip load of about
0.005" and a width of about 0.125". Actually, now that I think of it,
the Ti recycling pile was a mix of chips from several machines and
jobs. The widths were maybe 0.050 to 0.125" wide and I think there
were some thicker chips up to 0.025". It really didn't take much of a
spark to ignite the pile. However, I couldn't tell which size chip
burned first. I would guess(tm) that anything with a sharp edge would
be first to ignite.

>I'm not arguing but it does make a difference what size "kindling" you

It's my understanding that Ti will spontaneously burn in a high oxygen
environment. No ignition spark required.

<https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0022508861900121>
"Spontaneous ignition of massive shapes of titanium can occur at room
temperature when a fresh, oxide-free metal surface is exposed to
oxygen under pressure. Such a surface can be produced by the rupture
of a titanium specimen under tension."

Anyway, titanium tools are a bad idea when working in an explosive
atmosphere.
